Whatever the reason, this is a massive paradigm shift compared to a few years ago, when superhero movies were ubiquitous, and compared to a few decades ago, when they were still highly regarded.

At this point, there was not much hope for the genre to become worldwide sensations, with films at the time, such as "Batman and Robin" amounting to nothing more than quick entertainment for the masses. The turning point, however, arrived in 1978 with the release of Warner Brothers' Superman, which legitimized superhero films as high-ceiling blockbusters with substantial commercial potential. Still, this was not enough to warrant a shift in movie-making, as the film was considered a masterpiece that could not be replicated. Then, the early 2000s came, and it witnessed exponential growth in superhero productions, driven by advancements in computer-generated imaging, allowing filmmakers to convincingly render fantastical powers and otherworldly settings. Soon, the genre reached its zenith between 2016 and 2019, with an average of six films released annually and soaring box office revenues, In particular, Marvel's blockbuster hits like Black Panther (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) marked the peak of "Peak Superhero," with Black Panther grossing over $1.3 billion and receiving a Best Picture nomination.
