New Delhi: IIT Madras has become the inaugural Indian Institute of Technology to implement a sports quota for undergraduate (UG) admissions. The 'Sports Excellence Admission' (SEA) category will be incorporated starting from the academic session of 2024-2025.
Within the SEA category, two additional seats will be available, with one designated explicitly for female applicants. Those aspiring to apply through the sports quota must still meet the eligibility criteria of JEE Advanced 2024. Unlike JEE Main 2024 qualified candidates who utilise the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) portal for counselling registration, sports quota applicants must register on the official portal @jeeadv.iitm.ac.in/sea/.
The IIT Madras clarified that this initiative aims to acknowledge and reward talented students who have excelled in sports. The program is designed to motivate deserving individuals to pursue higher education while maintaining their excellence in sports.
IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti initially proposed introducing a sports quota during the IIT Council meeting held in April 2023. Presently, no other IITs have implemented a sports supernumerary quota for admission.
On February 2, the IIT Madras director said: “This is a very progressive step to ensure holistic education as envisaged in the National Education Policy 2020. This step is to acknowledge young children's sports achievements and allow them to further understand their respective sports from an engineering and technology perspective. IIT Madras has added many sports-related electives and state-of-the-art facilities.”
According to the statement, IIT-M will unveil a state-of-the-art sports complex featuring advanced equipment shortly. Expressing delight, Kamakoti remarked, "We are thrilled about the commencement of the 'Sports Excellence Admission' from July 2024. We hope that our alumni will go on to achieve global recognition as accomplished sports personalities."
