You Took your Family to a Nearby Restaurant Formal Letter IELTS General Writing Task 1 is a letter writing topic. The letter needs to address the utilities board regarding the overcharging of the monthly gas bill for last quarter. It contains three model answers that have three paragraphs namely the introduction, body, and conclusion. The letter must be clear and to the point.

Topic: You took your family to a nearby restaurant. You were disappointed with the meal and wish to complain to the manager.

Write a letter to the manager of the restaurant.
In your letter,

  • explain why you were at the restaurant
  • describe the problems
  • write about the action you want the manager to take

Model Answer 1

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to express my discontent with the meal that my family and I had at your restaurant last Sunday. I am a regular diner at your restaurant “Food Piper”. Therefore, the experience that I had was completely unexpected.

Recently, I have been promoted to a Senior Content Writer in my office. When I shared the news with my family, they suggested celebrating by going out on dinner. At that very moment, I knew which restaurant to pick and I requested them to meet at your restaurant. Since I was running late from work, I asked them to wait inside the restaurant. Firstly, the staff were so rude to my family, they didn’t allow them entry saying there was no prior booking. My family informed me the same but earlier I was always allowed entry without any online booking. I don’t know if this is a new policy that has been implemented in the restaurant but the least they could have done is welcome my family and allow them to wait inside the restaurant than at the entrance. Secondly, after much struggle, when we all placed our orders, it took your staff forever to serve us. Thirdly, I was shocked to notice the shrimp that I ordered had a pungent odour. After complaining about it, I was told that the restaurant had run out of shrimp. You can understand the level of frustration I had that day when while it was supposed to be a celebration, it turned out to be an unpleasant experience for my family and me.

I request you to kindly improve your management by adding buffer stocks of desirable food items. Also, either train your employee to be more hospitable or employ welcoming staff.

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter with utter disappointment due to the recent dining experience we had at your restaurant “Backyard Bowls”. I was accompanied by my friends and we had plans to celebrate Christmas evening with delicacies that your restaurant is famous for.

My friends and I had been planning to visit your restaurant for a long time. We were elated when our schedule synched and we all had a Christmas holiday. To make our day memorable, we picked your restaurant. There is no doubt that the ambience of the restaurant is pleasing but how I wished our experience was so too. After waiting for approximately 40 minutes, we got our order on the table.

Since we were starving, we devoured the food only to realise how stale it tasted. The lettuce in the salad that I ordered tasted rotten and the chicken too had a bad odour to it. I could not even ingest the first bite. I had to rush to the washroom to puke it out. Upon complaining to the staff, they said replacing the order would take another 40minutes. We were impatient by then and had no choice but to leave. Such an experience was unexpected from a famous restaurant chain like yours.

I request you to kindly maintain proper hygiene and only use fresh products. Also, please offer a quicker service as waiting approximately for an hour is not justified.

I hope you will consider my suggestions. I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to let you know about the unpleasant experience I had at your restaurant “Chillies”. I visited the restaurant to celebrate my birthday with my family members only to find the detestable taste of the food that was served.

My family and I have been loyal customers of the Chillies chain. We often visit its outlet for any occasion. Yesterday when we ordered food, we were surprised to notice the veggies looked uncooked and there was a stench emitting out of them. We mostly had a pleasant experience at Chillies’ outlets. However, instead of going to the one located in Sector 17, we opted for your outlet. When we requested the staff to change our meal, he denied saying that would be charged. It was appalling to encounter such an experience as it has never happened in any of the branches.

I request you to kindly ensure proper hygiene and quality for which the restaurant chain is known or else eventually ratings will go down. Also, please employ hospitable staff.
