You Have A Friend Who Is About To Enter University IELTS General Writing Task 1 requires candidates to write a 150-word letter. Candidates will have to complete the assessment in 20 minutes. The IELTS general writing task 1 is a letter-writing task based on different topics. This IELTS general writing task 1 accounts for a letter to a friend to advise him on which subject to specialize in. Topic: You have a friend who is about to enter university, and he wants you to advise him on which subject to specialize in – history, in which he is very interested, or computer science, which offers better job prospects.

Model Answer 1

Dear Peter,

I am so happy to receive your letter today morning. I was surprised to know that you have already completed your secondary school and are looking forward to going to college. Time flies.

In your letter, you asked about my opinion on which subject you must major in. I think you should follow your instinct. I believe you should take up the subject you are passionate about. I know you very closely, and also we are very much connected. From your letter, I can understand your choice of taking history as your major subject. But you also mention following the path of your elder brother. I know that an IT career choice provides a lump sum amount of earnings. But who can say that you will not have a great career reading history? For instance, there is a huge demand for history in schools, colleges, and more. Also if you don’t want to be a teacher you can become an archaeologist in the future. I guess your preference for history can take you to a better future.

Again I would like to advise that you must follow your passion and choices.

I hope you are in good health and spirit when you repeat my letter. I am extremely honored and flattered about you asking my opinion about choosing a subject in your college. In my decision, you must probably decide which subject might give you a better future. Also, keep in mind that the subject must provide you happiness in the three-year scores of your college. You must like the subject and feel free to know more about it. As I have known you since childhood I believe History would be a great subject for you. The way you memorize and write shows your fondness for the subject. Besides, the 10+2 mark sheet also gives us the same opinion regarding History. Besides conventional wisdom, you must do and read the subjects which you can love and feel free to take it as a profession in later life. Lastly, in defense of studying History, the job perspective after studying has opportunities in many universities and recruitment as faculty members. However, I would like to think more as it is ultimately your choice and your future. I hope you decide the best for you.

I feel extremely honored that you asked for my guidance regarding the subject you would take up in your college. Well, you have mentioned that you aspire to study history. This is quite a popular subject among students. Also, history is an interesting subject, and people who like to know about the past are likely to have an excellent memory. However, I would recommend you to opt for computer science as we are living in and technological era. The computer has taken up in the field of education and work. As for now, you are interested in history but if you think of it from a career perspective computer science has more opportunities than history. A degree in computer science will offer you a number of job opportunities in IT companies. I hope you take up your decision wisely, after considering my opinion.
