Writing your First Letter to Pen Pal IELTS General Writing Task 1

Formal Letter to Change Hostel Room IELTS General Writing Task 1 is a letter-writing topic. Candidates are required to address in an informal tone. It contains three model answers that have three paragraphs namely the introduction, body, and conclusion. The letter must be clear and to the point.

IELTS General Writing Task 1 includes letter writing either in formal, informal, or semi-formal patterns. Candidates need to complete the task within 20 minutes. Students can consider their preparation for the writings section from the IELTS Writing Practice Papers and enhance their writing skills effectively. IELTS writing score is marked based on band scores. The band scores range from 0 to 9.

Topic: You have a pen pal and you are writing your first letter to that pen pal. You do not need to write any addresses.

Write at least 150 words.
In your letter

• describe your previous studies and/or work experience,
• your current activities, hobbies and interests.
• Also, tell your pen pal that you will be visiting him/her.

Hello John,

I hope you are doing well. I am looking forward to being your pen pal and am delighted to write you this letter. I received your letter and was glad to know so many things about you. I would like to share a few things about me as well. I live in Delhi, the capital city of India. I completed my Bachelor’s in Arts last year from Delhi University. Currently I am studying for my IELTS exam to pursue Master’s in Arts in the UK. In my free time I like to watch films, watch series, and read books. I prefer reading thriller or sci-fi novels. In your letter you had mentioned you loved reading books too and are a fan of the thriller genre. I am glad that we share a common interest. I would like to tell you that I am an ardent fan of sports and love playing football, basketball and badminton. All these help me keep fit and healthy. I was thrilled to receive your invitation to visit you in England. I will surely come and visit you once I get selected in a university for my higher studies in the UK.

Dear Marla,

I hope you and your family are doing well. I am so glad that we are pen friends and as it my first letter to you I would like to tell you a few things about me. I am from Bangalore, a city in the Southern part of India. I have completed my MBA from IIM Bangalore, one of the reputed MBA colleges in the country. Fortunately, I got an on campus placement offer in Google. I am now working as a Software Engineer in Google and representing an offshore project in the United States. In my free time I like to read books, play sports and write content for websites as a ghost writer.

Golfing and squash are my favorite sports. As you had mentioned in your letter earlier that you often visit the USA for work, I would be excited to meet you someday. I am looking forward to your response and would like to know next when you will be visiting the US, so that we can catch up.

Dear Michelle,

I was thrilled to receive your last letter. I realized we shared common interests like reading books, dancing, sports and an innate love for cooking. Since I got to know about you I would further like to introduce myself and share a few of my interests. I was appalled to see that we both also hold the same educational qualifications. However, I have completed my course of Bachelor’s in Technology in Electrical Engineering from SRM University, Chennai (Tamil Nadu). As you know I reside in Delhi, whereas Tamil Nadu is in the southern part of India, thus, it was somewhat difficult to adjust to the extreme climatic conditions. Anyhow I managed to survive this extreme change in weather. I am currently working in Siemens, Chennai office and am most likely to shift to Germany for another project in a month or so. To catch up with my hobby of dancing, I recently joined a classical dance class. Classical dance is one of the oldest forms of dance in our country and is loved by many. From working out to learning new cooking recipes, my weekends are extremely packed. I would love for you to try one of my recipes. Thank you for inviting me to visit Prague. I am excited to meet you. As I will be shifting to Germany soon, let us then decide when to meet. Until then take care and keep in touch.
