Topic: Although you are meant to present your thesis project in one month, your sister is getting married in Spain at the same time. You would like to change the dates of your presentation.

Write a letter to your professor. In your letter:

  • Explain the situation
  • Remind the professor of your academic achievements to date.
  • Ask for a different date to present your thesis.

Model Answer 1:

Respected Professor,

I’m Neha Seghal from 2nd year PGPX. In this letter, I want you to consider my request for the postponement of my Thesis presentation date, which was originally scheduled on 25th September 2021.

I had registered for the CFA Level 1 Exam last year for the May batch but due to the pandemic they had postponed the exam date and my exam is scheduled on 25th September, 2021. I was notified about it this week and it’s the same date for all applicants. You’ve always mentored me and guided me to build a strong finance profile. The Chartered Financial Analyst course was a step in that direction. You know I’ve taken all my projects very seriously and I remembered how much you appreciated my mock presentation for this thesis. I’ve also included all the points you had mentioned in the Mock thesis and I hope you’ll be impressed with my in-depth research. I’m working relentlessly on the thesis presentation to impress the board with my work.

I hope you understand that I wouldn’t have asked for a change in date if it was at all negotiable. I’ve worked tremendously to ace this exam for the past few months along with my academics and didn’t let my academics suffer for it. This certification will further help in my upcoming semesters as well and I will ensure that I will maintain my Rank 1 in the upcoming semesters without fail.

I can give my presentation on 26th September itself. I’ve already prepared for it and would incorporate all your inputs to make it a very insightful thesis. I hope you will understand my situation and consider postponing my presentation date by a day. I will be highly obliged.

I’m eagerly looking forward to a positive response.

Thank you,
Yours Sincerely,
Neha Seghal

Model Answer 2:

Respected Professor,

I’m Piyush Goyal from 2nd-year M.A Psychology. I’m writing this letter as a request to change my presentation date. The scheduled date for my presentation is on the 4th of October, 2021.

Coincidentally, my cousin is having a liver transplant and since I’m the only one from the family with the same rare blood group as his, it is crucial for me to be physically present there during the surgery, as advised by his doctor. Since the transplant is rather complex in his case, there is a high chance of blood loss, so my presence is medically important. It’s a day-long surgery starting in the morning, so I had to be there by 9 am or else I would’ve completed my presentation at 10 am and left for the hospital.

I know it was mentioned clearly that once the dates are fixed, they cannot be changed but the situation here is unavoidable and the surgery cannot be rescheduled or else it will lead to further complications. I’ve always been very punctual with all my projects and presentations. And you know as my supervisor how much I’ve worked for this thesis in terms of both on-field and off-field research. The thesis is extremely important for me and will allow me to get a scholarship for my PhD in this very domain. This thesis will further prove my passion in this domain along with my consistent grades in all the semesters.

I’m also attaching the necessary medical documents which state the need for my physical presence during the surgery. I can do my presentation any day after the 4th of October, as per the board’s convenience and would furnish any extra documents needed for the formality. I hope you will understand the situation and consider my request.

I look forward to a positive response.

Thanking you,
Yours Sincerely,
Piyush Goyal

Model Answer 3:

Respected Professor,

I’m Reeta Nair from the 2nd year English Department, writing this letter to request you to reschedule my Presentation date, which is currently scheduled on 18th September,2021.

My brother’s wedding was due this December but due to his recent promotion, he needs to shift to the United States within a month. Because of that, the family decided to move up the wedding date as it would not be possible for him to travel so much within such a short period of time. So the most suitable date for the wedding to take place is the 18th of September. I tried to sway the decision but that’s the only convenient date for both parties in such short notice. Since we’re going to our ancestral home, it’s going to take us a few days to reach the place, as it is situated in the interiors.

I hope you understand my situation here, as I’m the only sibling, my presence on my brother’s big day is crucial and the overlapping of the dates is really unfortunate, as I’ve been working on my thesis tirelessly, spending hours everyday at the library gathering significant observations. As my supervisor, you’re aware how much I’ve worked on this thesis in terms of research and your help has made the process way more smoother than I’d expected. Throughout the course, I’ve proved my dedication in this subject through my consistent academic performance and research projects and rescheduling this one time will really give me the chance to again prove my passion in this domain.

I’d like to indicate that such an overlap will not happen in the future, as I’ve always been very punctual with my submissions. I will be back by the 20th of September, and I would be grateful if you could change my presentation date to the 21st of September. I’ve prepared for the presentation extensively and worked on all the inputs you had given me during my mock presentation. I hope you will understand the circumstances under which I’ve asked for the rescheduling and consider my request.

I’m eagerly looking forward to hearing a positive response.

Thanking you,
Yours Sincerely,
Reeta Nair
