Word Count Questions IELTS

Candidates have a common doubt in regards to word count questions in the IELTS test. While answering the questions in the IELTS listening, candidates come across three types of questions that require them two use limited words or numbers. The question types are as follows; “complete the sentence with one word or a number,” “two words,” and “no more than three words.” The majority of the IELTS listening questions have either one of the lines that are mentioned. The article will address how to count these words while answering and what is meant by one word or two words.

List of Word Count in IELTS

Candidates do attempt to count the words that they have written as answers. The question remains how do they attempt to do it. For example, how will one count – $20.80 or Mother-in-law? This is a challenge that candidates face while answering or preparing for IELTS exam. Candidates can find references for word count in IELTS from below mentioned examples:

  • X-ray

This word is counted as one word collectively. Candidates should keep in mind that a hyphenated word is always counted regardless of the number of hyphens you have in that word.

  • Isn’t

This is counted as a single word. Though “is not” is addressed to be of two words, using “isn’t” makes it a single word. Thus, candidates should remember that any word with an apostrophe is a single word.

  • 22nd November

This is addressed as two different words when writing. This is counted as one number and one word in IELTS listening tests.

  • Whiteboard

This is written and addressed as a single word.

  • $30.80

The above-mentioned amount is counted as a single number, thus this number is addressed to be as a single word.

  • 1990s

In writing, this is counted as one word, and in hearing, it is counted as one number.

  • In the canteen

This is a three-word phrase.

  • 1pm

In writing, this is counted as one word, and in hearing, it is counted as one number. Because the word 'pm' does not stand alone, it is not counted.
