Topic: Whether or Not Someone Achieves Their Aims is Mostly by a Question of Luck. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

A person’s achievement is determined by his will, strength, desire, and eagerness. A person who is dreaming to build a start-up, and be famous worldwide cannot just sit back and wait for luck to make it happen. Though it is true that there are many people who believe that the luck factor plays a huge role in turning a person’s desires into reality. But that is sheer belief, and in reality, a person needs to slog to make their dreams come true.

It is, in fact, very superficial to assume the fact that a person’s achievement is governed by luck more than their talents. Talent, effort, determination, perseverance, and mental strength should be prioritized more than luck. Luck is a very questionable phenomenon that is partly believed by people. To make it clear, luck is considered to be a success or failure that is a result of sheer chance and nothing more. There is a common saying by many people that our lives are like gambling, winning and losing depend on utter luck. In fact, it is believed by many that the phenomenon of luck is made up of human beings themselves. This is done in order to strengthen their actions. We often hear people saying, ‘That was her bad luck that he couldn’t pass even after studying so hard’, or ‘It was out of luck that she got the promotion.’ It may be identified that whenever something good happens people tend to consider it as part of good luck. While when something bad or disappointing takes place in someone’s life, they tend to blame having a bad luck. However, this sheer disbelief completely unhealthy. A person without any passion, determination and hard work may not be able to achieve success. It is not just the luck that needs to favour a person but definitely his/her own efforts as well. We can take one instance to understand this. In our neighborhood, we have a girl who belonged from a poor family with her father working at a tea stall, and her mother working as a maid. She had the aspiration to become a doctor. I watched the girl waking up early in the morning, cooking for her whole family, feeding her young brother. Packing her bags and attending school. After returning she would study, make her brother study. Then again cook for her parents, and then helping her father in the stall. She is today a famous doctor in our neighbourhood. It is not through luck but hard work that she could achieve what she wanted.

Band 7 IELTS Essay

There are many people who repeatedly reiterate a saying that a person’s achievements are based on their luck. This is a completely untrue statement, and I totally disagree with it. A person’s achievements are completely based on how strong their will to achieve that ambition is.

Had the saying of achieving one’s ambition based on luck been true, then by now many of the people would have been successful. But do we see numerous people being on Forbes’s cover? No. It is only those who have given their all, made all the tough moves, and put all their sweat into achieving it, have become successful. It is only industrious and affirmative people who get what they want. It is not just luck that helps people succeed. Let us take, for example, Steve Jobs, he doesn’t need any introduction in today’s time as he is known as the Chairman, Co-founder, and CEO of Apple. But it was only through perpetual hours of coding and experimenting, and eventually coming up with the Macintosh operating system that he is famous universally.

We then have Nick Vujicic who is an American motivational speaker and is famous around the world. Vujicic suffered from a rare disorder that took away his four limbs. He was without legs and hands but strived to secure a bachelor’s degree with double majors in finance and accounting. He is now known worldwide. He could succeed because he put in his hard work. This was not possible only out of luck. Luck is simply a minute factor that is present in a person’s life. The luck factor is quite dicey as well, a person can rely on hard work but not luck.

Band 7.5 IELTS Essay

The statement throws light on the fact that whether a person achieves their aim is completely based on sheer luck. As a matter of fact, I completely disagree with the given statement. Luck might be a trustworthy factor governing a person’s life as believed by many, but it cannot disregard the hard work that the person has put into it. A person’s achievements are a result of their immense hard work and perseverance. That cannot be based only on sheer luck.

If a person who is aiming to build an empire of their own, only believed in luck to make that possible, they would be entirely wrong. A person’s ambition depends on certain factors, their wants and desires play the most important part. The ambition of a human being is created based on the activities they do. It can be securing the highest rank in the university or winning that gold medal in the marathon, and more. Only luck cannot make a person’s ambitions turn into reality. It takes a person years and years of tough grind to get themselves in that position. The moment a person lacks self-esteem, they are instantly losing their motivation, and the minimal will to make their ambition turn into reality.

Let us take a look at Thomas Edison’s story, any introduction to this renowned inventor of the twentieth century would be less. This man conducted endless numbers of experiments with filaments, and ultimately after thousands of attempts, he landed with the perfect bulb. It was only after constant striving for years that Thomas Edison created the bulb that we are blessed with. Another person is Nguyen Ngoc Ky who never considered his disability as a complication. He was a person who completely erased the factor from his mind of not being able to write with his hand. He wrote with his leg and was a very famous teacher. All these instances show that only luck cannot help a person achieve their ambition.
