Topic: Weddings are getting bigger and more expensive. What is the reason for this? Is it a positive or negative development?

Band 8 IELTS Essay

Nowadays, weddings are extravagant parties that cost a lot of money to host. To flaunt their money and advance their social status, families are planning extravagant weddings. I think most of this is a bad development.

This change was mostly motivated by a strong desire to brag. Today, a family's social position is heavily influenced by how they plan their children's weddings. The party becomes more respectable the greater it is. Families are working hard to make their children's weddings unique as a result. The competition is an additional factor. People want their sons' or daughters' weddings to be more lavish than the nuptials of their next-door neighbours' kids. This rivalry has no bounds.

Of course, the rising materialism in society is the underlying cause. Marriages no longer serve to highlight the couple's closeness and shared affection. It's all about displaying money, ostentation, and social standing. It is a bad development since it encourages expenditure that isn't necessary and competition. It causes poor families a great deal of worry and can even harm their kids' prospects of finding a compatible partner. It results in debt. For the rest of their life, many parents, particularly the poor ones, struggle to pay off the debt they accrued to plan the wedding. Such weddings produce a lot of waste as well. For instance, during situations like this, enormous amounts of food are frequently squandered. Moreover, I believe that it will be inappropriate to remake this as a positive or a negative development. As these are the necessities of mankind, and further people ear to satisfy and fulfil their needs.

In conclusion, weddings are getting bigger and more extravagant since both the parents and the spouses want it to be a special occasion. This, in my opinion, is a bad trend since it encourages reckless spending and puts low-income families and couples in a terrible financial situation.

Band 7 IELTS Essay

Compared to the past, wedding rituals today involve significant sums of money and a sizable crowd of guests. One of the main causes of this trend, in my opinion, is people's propensity for boasting. The purpose of this essay is to provide an explanation for why over budgeted and larger wedding celebrations tend to cause more harm than good.

Showing off is the main motivation behind lavish spending and big wedding guest lists. This is due to the fact that a sizable percentage of people think that boasting about their money and overpaying on such events will make them popular in society. For instance, in Punjab, people like renting wedding palaces, which are typically expensive, to planning weddings at their homes.

Additionally, the setup for food and seating will be more extensive the more guests are anticipated. As a result, it is not a good idea to invite everyone in order to expand the size of the wedding festivities because doing so would raise the entire cost.

I think it's a bad development that weddings are becoming increasingly elaborate and expensive. Due to their inability to spend a significant amount of money on nuptials, people from middle class households may feel inferior to those from wealthy ones. They prefer borrowing money instead, and they take a long time to pay back the loans for those purposes.

Another thing to consider is that the money that is wasted on weddings could be better preserved for charitable endeavours like supporting orphanages and schools. By doing so, people will not only help a good cause, but also feel good about themselves for being able to assist others in need. Therefore, smaller weddings with lower budgets are preferable.

In conclusion, despite attempts to boast about one's money and connections, I think it is useless because it may make the impoverished feel inferior. In addition, if people donate that money to charity, the world will be a better place for those who genuinely need it.

Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

In the age of fashion and reward, people are more likely to have lavish and elaborate wedding ceremonies. People are now better off, and they spend their money celebrating their rituals to elevate their social position. It appears to primarily harm both our environment and our working-class society.

People today spend more time and money celebrating and having fun. In today's youth, destination weddings are the preferred option. If people are unable to pay for the wedding expenses all at once, the bank also offers loans. Later, this could cause stress from having to repay the debt by the deadline. Moreover, whether people can afford it or not, expensive weddings are simply a trend right now.

The ritual has put a lot of pressure and tension on the girl's parents their entire lives. Therefore, it is the pressure placed on the general populace that fuels crime, health problems, unhealthy competitiveness for show-off, and other social ills.

Rich people now hold large-scale wedding ceremonies in historic palaces and natural settings. Such a large wedding leaves behind damaging footprints in virgin areas, seriously harming the ecology. The result is mass garbage. People employ artificial and plastic items to decorate the space. Everywhere people travel, their footprints are left. However, even at lavish weddings, guests love the food, hospitality, and tradition. The alternatives for a straightforward, pleasant, and environmentally friendly wedding are numerous.

However, given the significant amounts of money and food wasted, this is unquestionably a harmful trend. This idea is mostly supported by the fact that these excessive expenditures do not benefit anyone. Although a lot of money is spent on clothing and decorations, most family members focus on the shortcomings rather than praising the concerned families. As a result, this money should be put to use by being donated to charity organisations so that they can assist someone who is in need. The fact that some families spend more than they can afford is another factor. Their propensity to copy others led to debt, which they have to pay back for virtually the rest of their lives.

In order to minimise the negative impact on the environment and our community. People should exercise restraint while spending money on nuptials and work to make ceremonies as simple as feasible.
