A step to conserve water is the step to secure the future. The most essential of all the natural resources on earth is water. A drop of water is worth more than a sack of gold for the thirsty man. If each one of us makes an effort to save water today, it will save us later. Water conservation is what can reduce the scarcity of water. It aims to improve the efficiency of the use of water, reduce losses and waste and save money. Water conservation has become essential in all regions, even where water seems abundant. That's because our water resources are finite and they are getting smaller every year.
Water is Life: Everything on Earth requires water to sustain itself. But abusing water means that we are lessening its ability to provide us with this basic necessity. Water is a limited resource and Earth always has, and will always have, the same amount of water. The population growth puts a strain on water supplies and clean water is reduced by the pollution and contamination we create. We are polluting the water for all of Earth's creatures, sending chemicals like oil and fertilizers through our rivers that ultimately end up in the oceans. Sure, we can rely on water treatment plants to send us cleaner water, but a baby dolphin obviously can't build these facilities. Let's determine what is at stake if we continue down this path of water waste.
Less and/or more expensive energy: The extraction of common sources of energy (oil, gas, coal, biomass etc.) requires water. Hydropower, energy derived from falling water, uses fresh water. The less fresh water that we have the more expensive energy becomes.
Less food: A full 70 percent of humanity's fresh water supply is used to grow crops. Freshwater fish, another major source of our diets and a large sector of the food chain require fresh water to survive. The more we pollute and/or abuse our water supply, the less likely we are to maintain a sustainable source of food. In the U.S. alone, an estimated 40 per cent of lakes prohibit fishing and swimming due to pollution.
What is to Blame? One of the other factors is population growth. While we can't spur the population, we can spur our abuse of water so that we can prevent millions more from dying from water-related illnesses.
Climate change is caused by the burning of fossil fuels. The effects include reduced rainfall in some areas, halting the flow of fresh water to regions that were formerly accustomed to nature providing this very necessary resource Deforestation has an impact that prevents our forests from collecting, storing, purifying and providing fresh water to populations that lie downstream.
What Can You Do? You can start by saving water at home. It can be achieved at a low cost. On a local level, do what you can to get involved in local events or non-profit organizations where factors that affect water - pollution, deforestation, poor agricultural practices etc. need to be addressed.
Questions 7-13
Do the following statements agree with the information given in the text above?
In boxes 7-13 on your answer sheet, write
TRUE - if the statement agrees with the information
FALSE - if the statement contradicts the information
NOT GIVEN - if there is no information on this
7. Saving water at home does not require any significant cost outlay.
Answer: TRUE
Supporting statement: “.........You can start by saving water at home. It can be achieved at a low cost..........”
Keywords: start, cost
Keyword Location: para 6, Lines 1-2
Explanation: The passage explicitly states that saving water at home can be achieved at a low cost. This means that no significant financial expenditure is required to conserve water in a household setting, making the statement true.
8. Earth is a self-contained ecosystem concerning water.
Answer: TRUE
Supporting statement: “..........Water is a limited resource and Earth always has, and will always have, the same amount of water..........”
Keywords: Water, amount
Keyword Location: para 2, Line 3
Explanation: The passage asserts that Earth always has the same amount of water, indicating that it is a self-contained ecosystem in terms of water resources. This implies that the water cycle is a closed system, making the statement true.
9. Taking measures to conserve water not only saves you money, it also is of benefit to the greater community.
Answer: TRUE
Supporting statement: “........It aims to improve the efficiency of use of water, reduce losses and waste and saves money............”
Keywords: improve, money
Keyword Location: para 1, Line 5
Explanation: The passage notes that water conservation reduces losses and waste, and saves money. These actions benefit the individual by saving money and the community by conserving a vital resource. Hence, the statement is true.
10. The more we abuse our water supply, the more likely we are to maintain a sustainable source of food.
Answer: FALSE
Supporting statement: “..........The more we pollute and/or abuse our water supply, the less likely we are to maintain a sustainable source of food..........”
Keywords: pollute, less
Keyword Location: para 4, Line 5
Explanation: The passage clearly states that abusing the water supply makes it less likely to maintain a sustainable source of food. This directly contradicts the statement, making it false.
11. Pollution from human activities, especially agriculture, makes its way into lakes,
streams and ultimately our oceans.
Answer: TRUE
Supporting statement: “.........We are polluting the water for all of Earth's creatures, sending chemicals like oil and fertilizers through our rivers that ultimately end up in the oceans..........”
Keywords: pollution, ends
Keyword Location: para 2, Lines 6-7
Explanation: The passage mentions that pollutants from human activities, such as agriculture, make their way through rivers and end up in the oceans. This confirms the statement as true.
12. On a local level, we should turn a blind eye to the global impacts of water scarcity and conservation.
Answer: FALSE
Supporting statement: “.........On a local level, do what you can to get involved in local events or non-profit organizations where factors that affect water - pollution, deforestation, poor agricultural practices etc. need to be addressed..........”
Keywords: profit, agricultural
Keyword Location: para 6, Lines 3-4
Explanation: The passage encourages involvement in local events and organizations to address water-related issues, indicating that local actions should be taken with an awareness of their global impact. Therefore, the statement is false.
13. Climate change prevents us from collecting, storing, purifying and providing
freshwater to populations that lie downstream.
Answer: FALSE
Supporting statement: “..........Deforestation has an impact that prevents our forests from collecting, storing, purifying and providing fresh water to populations that lie downstream.........”
Keywords: deforestation, prevents
Keyword Location: para 5, Lines 4-5
Explanation: The passage states that deforestation, not climate change, prevents forests from managing fresh water for downstream populations. Thus, the statement attributing this impact to climate change is false.
