There are two writing tasks in IELTS. There is no choice between the two. Both the tasks will have to be completed. IELTS Writing Task 1 is a descriptive one. It consists of visual information like a diagram, chart, graph, table, or map. You have to describe the given visual information in a minimum of 150 words in about 20 minutes. You have to identify and write its name suitably.

Visual diagrams such as line graph, bar chart, table, and pie chart deal in numbers. To describe the diagram correctly, you have to read the numbers, compare them and describe the trends perfectly. There are two types of “number questions.” They are Change Over Time and Static.

Change Over Time number questions generally pertain to a line graph. It shows how numbers change over time, such as manufacturing employment and trade deficit between 1970 and 2010. Static number questions are related to a bar chart, a pie diagram, or a table that shows numbers for one point in time, such as People with Permanent Jobs in India, in 2021.

The above line graph shows data on manufacturing employment and US/China trade balance between 1970 and 2010. The graph has to be interpreted through formal and official language structure. 5) Too many paragraphs will not give a clear picture of the description of the diagram.

6) The terminology that is used should be as given in the diagram, or the apt synonyms.

7) Avoid spelling mistakes while making out the paragraph.

8) Grammatically use different kinds of linkers, nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, phrases, and clauses.

9) Sentence structures should be formal, grammatical with apt words.

10) Sentences should include both numbers and percentages to give a perfect meaning to the paragraph.

11) Sentences in paragraphs should have a logical sequence and coherence. This will make the examiner understand your point of view.

12) Leave a gap between different words and paragraphs.

Collect several IELTS Exam question papers or purchase online to practice the above task well in advance of the exam. Write paragraphs in your own words following the above-given sentence structures. Always include the numbers and trends given in the diagram. If you inculcate a habit of reading economic columns in newspapers, especially charts and graphs, you will improve your vocabulary and structure formation.
