What is an Uncountable Noun?

Countable nouns are nouns that can be counted in numbers.

For example: one book / two books. When we use countable nouns, we use the article "a" and the plural "s" (a house, two houses)

Uncountable nouns are nouns that can't be counted.

For example: information.

The word information is itself plural so we cannot write: one information/ two informations. The word "information" can't be counted using numbers.

What types of Uncountable Nouns are there?

Example:

Liquids: oil, milk, and water
Metals: Gold, platinum, copper

  • abstract ideas

Irregular Uncountable Nouns

Some uncountable Nouns are irregular, which means they can be considered as both countable and uncountable.

Example:

  • Room

Countable: This is my room in the house.
Uncountable: There is not much room left in the place.

  • Hair

Countable: There is hair in my soup.
Uncountable: I'm having so much hair fall these days.

More irregular uncountable nouns are -business, time, paper, and so on.
