The volunteer program is aimed at helping to conserve and protect the population of Olive Ridley Turtles in Costa Rica, although other species of turtles are also involved. The program is run at Ostional Beach which has been an active conservation area for the last forty years. Volunteers can sign up for any length of time from 2 to 12 weeks. All volunteers will be housed with local families near the beach - do not expect luxury, this is basic at best. Have your dictionary ready because English is not usual in local families. It is possible to sign up as a group or just as an individual without prior experience but we have an age requirement over 18. A health check and police check will also be required. The main involvement in this program is with recording data, helping with tagging. Furthermore, removing debris from the beach to ensure clear passage for adult and baby turtles and also to assist in egg relocation. This is a unique experience for anyone interested in turtles and conservation.
Multiple Choice Type Questions
Complete the sentences below by choosing the correct letter.
Answer: 3- Various kinds of turtles
Explanation: The sentence which supports this answer is “is aimed at helping to conserve and protect the population of Olive Ridley Turtles in Costa Rica. Although other species of turtles are also involved.” If you continue to listen to the audio you find that other species of turtles are also involved, but not all types of turtles. Thus options (a) and (b) are wrong answers.

Answer: 2- No more than 12 weeks
Explanation: The sentence which supports this answer is “Volunteers can sign up for any length of time from 2 to 12 weeks.” Since there is a time limit given, option (a) is a wrong choice, and option (c) gives a much lesser time which is again wrong.
Answer: 3- Basic with a local family
Explanation: The sentence which supports this answer is “All volunteers will be housed with local families near the beach - do not expect luxury, this is basic at best.” Option (a) is wrong because it says luxurious stay. Although there is the use of the word “best” in option (b), it is wrong because the actual stay is just basic.
Answer: 3- Over the age of 18 but do not need experience
Explanation: The sentence which supports this answer is “It is possible to sign up as a group or just as an individual. Without prior experience but we have an age requirement over 18.” The keyword here is “must”. Options (a) and (b) are wrong because they say that only individuals can join and experience is required.
Answer: 1- Clear the beach of rubbish
Explanation: The sentence which supports this answer is “The main involvement in this program is with recording data, helping with tagging. Moreover, removing debris from the beach to ensure clear passage for adult and baby turtles and also to assist in egg relocation.” Option (b) is a wrong choice because it says baby turtles are relocated. Option (c) is again wrong because there is nothing about moving turtles in the audio.
