TRAINING TO BE A LIFEGUARD

  1. A lifeguard supervises swimmers and protects those at risk of drowning or injury in the water. They rescue swimmers who are in danger and perform first aid if required. Do not think being a lifeguard will give you a paid reason to enjoy yourself at the beach. It is hard work that involves intensive physical training and long hours of concentration.
  2. A lifeguard has responsibility for many lives, and they need to be watching what is going on in the water at all times and be able to make quick decisions. They also have to do a lot of paperwork to record what happens each day.
  3. To become a lifeguard at a beach or pool in the USA, you need to be certified. This certification can be studied through agencies that are registered to train lifeguards. The training program should include lessons on first aid, including CPR and the use of a defibrillator. Lifeguards need to undergo regular recertification throughout their careers to make sure they are using the most up- to-date practices. Of course, you also need to be a very strong swimmer.

  4. In the USA, being a lifeguard is a paid profession with lifeguards earning about $40,000 per year. However, most earn less than this because, except at heated swimming pools and in warm climate states like Florida, it is mainly seasonal work. Often lifeguards get extra qualifications to become swimming trainers so they can supplement their lifeguard income.
  5. One of the benefits of being a lifeguard is that it ensures you stay fit. However, constant sun exposure does put lifeguards at risk for skin cancers, and preventive measures should be taken. Being a lifeguard is not restricted to young people, some lifeguards continue the job all their working lives, in some cases for fifty years!
  6. If you decide to become a lifeguard in the years that you are at college, it is excellent material to add to your CV as it will show that you have held a position of responsibility. The skills you gain as a lifeguard by working in the community are highly regarded by future employers.
