Topic: Some people believe that tourism creates more tension between countries rather than helping individuals better understand other cultures. To what extent do you agree with this opinion?
Band 8 IELTS Essay
Tourism is one of the fastest-growing industries today. Some people believe that many countries have tensions prevailing between each other due to tourism. There are also people who believe that tourism creates a bridge to minimize the gap between cultures and countries. This is a debatable topic since there are always two sides to a coin. However, in my opinion, despite such a perception, tourist interactions usually tend to be positive. It might be possible that the reason for the occurrence of conflict and tensions between tourists and locals is a lack of understanding of cultures. Tourism helps to reduce this lack of understanding.
Our world consists of 195 countries and 7 continents. Every country has a different culture, language, and traditions. In the Middle East and Southeast Asia, people are conservative and they have a strict code of conduct and dressing. On the other hand, western culture is very liberal. When people from liberal countries visit these countries, there is a huge possibility for problems to arise. Locals expect foreigners to follow their customs, their dressing style, their food habits, etc. This is sometimes not possible since the visitors may not comply. Also, there is a huge language barrier between countries. In India, people majorly speak Hindi. This language will obviously be unknown to foreigners. This creates a language barrier. There are instances of locals attacking tourists for disrespecting their culture. These are the basic cause of tension between the tourist and the locals. I believe that this can only be minimized with the help of more and more tourism.
I believe if people visit more, they will learn about the cultures. They will also learn the language and the traditions. Until and unless foreigners learn local traditions, it is impossible to bridge the gap and solve the conflicts. Generally, the majority of interactions between a tourist and local people are friendly and cordial. An average person, who is on a trip to another country encounters friendly customs officials, taxi drivers who chat amiably till they reach the destination, and other similar countless interactions. The cordial communication between tourists and locals emphasizes mutual understanding between diverse cultures. In conclusion, friendly interactions between locals and tourists outweigh exaggerated glitches in tourism and culture. Most people in all countries are friendly. Tourism also benefits them since it brings the economy and helps the locals with their livelihood. Therefore, people need to keep this perspective while traveling to any other country to overcome prejudices and misunderstandings. Everyone should understand that the tourists have come to a foreign land not to quarrel but have a good time. They might be unknown of the culture and it is our duty to teach them. This can be done in a very cordial manner. At the end of the day, tourism benefits and uplifts the reputation of the country.
Band 7 IELTS Essay
One of the biggest industries in the world is the tourism industry which has been experiencing growth at an unprecedented scale. It becomes important to understand that tourism has the ability to create a bridge between different cultures and help in understanding people better. However, some people believe it is the reason for creating immense tensions among one another. Tourism can create conflict due to the cultural differences that are prevalent between a tourist and a local.
Tourists who visit other countries experience cultural shock as no two different societies ’ cultures are the same. Thus, there is a huge possibility that they can misunderstand the activities of natives and might even take offense leading to conflicts. For instance, In Tirupati, a pilgrimage center located in Andhra Pradesh, the authorities caught a person with a bottle of beer. Later, temple authorities informed the tourists of the religious significance and customs of the place. On the bright side, tourism plays a huge role in the promotion of global peace and understanding. When tourists visit a country, they learn to respect local culture and way of life and this further facilitates a better relationship between the two countries. Also, the conflicts can be resolved easily if locals understand why a tourist does things differently. Instead of blaming a tourist, the locals should try to empathize with tourists and try to correct them in the right way. Foreigners should respect and cooperate with local people to avoid any conflicts. Governments also should educate people on the cultural differences that exist in a particular society and provide ways to deal with them. In conclusion, it is given that conflicts arise due to the growing popularity of tourism and the increase in purchasing power of individuals. But these conflicts should not outweigh the positive aspects of tourism. There should be the promotion of cultures by sorting out any conflicts with little effort.
Band 6 IELTS Essay
International Tourism is supposed to be one of the biggest industries in the world. However, it is commonly believed that it is the reason for creating tensions between the local communities and the tourists although these tensions cannot be considered as a major issue. Accordingly, I do not agree with the argument hence, the essay would focus on how tourism is able to contribute positively to society. Firstly, understand why I consider tourism creates stress in the country is the rate of increase in crime.
Travelers travel to numerous territories and carry different types of elements in their bags. It is a harmful influence on the young generation. For example, a local newspaper published about 90% of alcohol materials imported from foreign countries by tourists in Bangladesh. This false culture gives a negative matter which cannot be disregarded as well. When a visitor comes to explore other nations, the local people have language barriers, which is an obstacle. Hence tourism can destroy cultural and ethnic cities. However, tourism has the ability through which people from different parts of the world to visit different places in order to explore new cultures. By gaining knowledge and acknowledging cultural differences, people are able to collaborate more. Tourism as an industry contributes massively to the economy of a country. Significantly, cultural amalgamation takes place fact that people are able to gain more experiences with different cultural and traditional customs. Moreover, local cultures and traditions get noticed and popularity hence, increasing the importance of local cultures, many times at global levels. Hence, the positive aspects are way more essential and any conflicts and tensions can be eradicated by combined efforts of the government and local communities.
