Topic: A government has a responsibility to its citizens to ensure their safety. Therefore, some people think that the government should increase spending on defense but spend less on social benefits. To what extent do you agree?

Band 7.5 IELTS Essay

Any government's primary duty is to protect and ensure the safety of its people. Therefore, a lot of people think that the government should prioritise defence spending over social benefits. While I agree that spending on defence is essential. I also believe that residents should not be denied the advantages of social programmes that are just as vital to the general welfare.

The main requirement for any state's sovereignty is the defence of its citizens against external invasion at all times. Attempts by foreign nations or terrorist groups to attack security forces or people can result in massive loss of life and material damage. For instance, the separatist movement was supported by Pakistan in the Indian state of Kashmir. It has cost thousands of innocent lives and severely damaged public property over the past 20 years. As a result, the government is forced to spend billions of dollars deploying a sizable military presence in these border regions. The government could, however, appropriate enough money for social programmes if there was peace along all borders.

To avoid sacrificing social spending for excessive defence spending, the government should exercise restraint. As a result, people, notably those from lower-income and poor areas, rely heavily on government aid for healthcare and education. In order to improve the lives of society's weaker groups, the government must subsidise these activities. Reducing the gap between the rich and the poor in society is crucial. This is just as crucial as the defence budget. Due to extreme inequality in people's living standards, disregarding those from the lowest social strata might lead to unrest and disorder in the nation. The government must offer social advantages to the most vulnerable citizens if the country is to flourish as a whole.

To summarise, I believe that spending on defence to deter the actions of unfriendly neighbours is also necessary. It is just as necessary as helping needy residents through different social benefit systems.

Band 8 IELTS Essay

In today's world, people confront provocative crime on a regular basis. Many people think that the government should spend more money on the military than on social services. This article will highlight the need to create social welfare and why the government should invest money in defence.

The top duty of any government is to estimate a budget for the security of all its residents. Maintaining security is, first and foremost, primary responsibility in some specific instances since it establishes a strong basis for a nation's stability. Also, given invasions of archipelagos are common, military investment is recommended there to prevent any potential conflict. For instance, the United States is regarded as the most powerful nation and has the greatest military budget in the world. In 2017, they spent over $610 billion on equipment and manpower for the military. There is no doubt that when a battle breaks out, the majority of people could end up becoming the primary victims of a massacre or even death. In order to protect oneself from outside forces, many people believe that a sizable percentage of the budget should be set up for the security system.

However, it is still thought that important sectors should also receive government funding. In order to benefit residents, the government must first spend money on social welfare programmes. Such as healthcare, education, and recreation. Residents could suffer substantial harm from a lack of social benefits. For example, North Korea. Over there many poor children and sad beggars are living on the streets due to a lack of administrative attention. Additionally, taxes are paid by the public to support and create the parliament. They should therefore receive all services that resulted from that. This sum of money should be allocated to social welfare programmes that benefit society.

To sum up, the administration of any state's government must prioritise public safety. To imply, I'm certain that countries, where people live, cannot afford the scarcity of these necessities.

Band 8.5 IELTS Essay

Protecting one's borders has become crucial for every country in the modern world. Most people are led to believe by this concept that government spending on social services should be reduced. Especially in order to allocate more money to the defence industry. I disagree with this point of view. However, I do think that for any nation to develop and succeed, both of these areas require investment and work.

National security comes first and is of the utmost significance. The troops aid a state in keeping the peace and guarding its boundaries. If there are no forces to protect the inhabitants, a foreign country may attack the country in an effort to take its natural riches. Effectively making its own citizens its slaves. Additionally, they support the state in keeping law and order. For instance, during the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack, the CRPF intervened, and neutralised the attackers. And assisted hundreds of people in leaving the scene.

On the other hand, it is not long-term profitable to support defence at the expense of social security. The impoverished will choose the incorrect path for survival if amenities like food, health care, and education are not available to them. For instance, if a hungry individual in poverty is unable to buy food, they may resort to crime, like stealing money, to fulfil their need. This makes other citizens feel less secure by raising the state's crime rate. As a result, it's crucial to support society's weaker groups.

To sum up, in my opinion, it is crucial to invest in both national and social security programmes. Because no country can survive on just one of them and instead requires both. The split of funds between the defence and social benefit sectors must be perfectly balanced by every government.
