Where you read it for the first time?

I recently received a list of "IELTS writings" from one of my students. He advised me to study them before the test, saying they were the most well-liked IELTS essays. There was one article on this list that I was completely unable to continue. The author covered "Anorexia nervosa's" causes and available treatments entirely through the use of keywords.

How you find the meaning for the word?

I immediately grabbed my dictionary to look up the definition of this word, but I found the explanation to be unclear. I made an immediate call to a buddy of mine who had just passed the ielts exam. Sadly, he was also unfamiliar with the term, but he gave me a link to a website hosted by an IELTS specialist where I could study more about this subject. I was pleasantly astonished to discover how each IELTS essay was discussed in length, along with sample responses, the instant I went to the website he recommended. I entered "Anorexia" into the search bar, and the model response immediately showed up. I later learned that it is a condition marked by compulsive non-eating.

Why you found it difficult to learn?

I was worried about what would happen if I had to write this essay for an exam because I had no idea what this word meant. Finally, the sample response helped me to understand the causes and solutions, and I felt much more confident in my ability to complete this essay as a result. I then helped my friends learn this new word after that. Overall, it was a positive experience because I learned a new term.

Even if a language has tens of thousands of terms in its lexicon, the human brain can only retain around a fifth of that vocabulary. To date, I've retained tens of thousands of words, and it's difficult for me to recollect which ones I first learned. One such word was “Patriotism”.

It was about the age of 15 or 16 that I overheard my father and one of his friends having a private talk in a tiny office he had built in our home. Despite the fact that I had no idea what "patriotism" meant earlier, I was unable to go on.

How you find the meaning for the word?

My curiosity was piqued by this word, so I went to speak with my father to find out what it meant. Astonished, he responded with great pride by explaining that this isn't just a term to learn, but an attitude that every citizen should have. At Kargil, he informed me that Indian troops led by my cousin's brother's regiment had triumphed over their adversaries.

I was ecstatic to hear this, and the term "elated" struck a chord in my heart as well as my mind, perhaps because of my father's loud voice and tears of joy. I am happy to be an Indian because Indian minds are among the most brilliant in the world, able to come up with something amazing even with limited means and opportunity.

Why you found it difficult to learn?

I found the word difficult as I was unaware of its meaning at that point. Only a handful of the many examples abound, such as ISRO's international development and the growth of the IT industry. There are quirky languages spoken in every town or nation, ranging from regional to worldwide ones. Hence it is imperative to maintain these languages in this period of globalization to retain our historic roots and unique identities.

This happened when I was in school. I was in class 5, which was the final class before the transfer. As part of our exam preparation, we had to learn 10 difficult or unknown words. I came across this word in a newspaper.

We were given 5 words by the teacher in charge to learn at home over the next 24 hours. We had to select 5 other words on our own. Once I saw the word, it caught my attention. Instantaneously, I pulled out my dictionary to seek up the definition of this word. However, the explanation was difficult to comprehend for me. I called my private tutor and he came to my house. He explained the meaning with examples. I was then able to understand what it meant. I also learned the applications of the word “phenomenon”.

I found the word difficult as I was unaware of its meaning at that point. Only a handful of other words were provided as the meaning. I was unable to understand what it exactly meant. Finally, my tutor assisted me in comprehending the causes and answers, and I felt much more secure in my ability to tackle the usage of this word.
