This table shows changes in spending patterns for the average Australian household of 4,444 between 1999 and 2001. Data is adjusted to Australian dollars per month. Overall, spending on food, electricity, housing, and goods and services increased to a greater or lesser extent, but decreased on clothing and transportation. First, my monthly electric and water bills have increased dramatically from $75 to $120 in 10 years. The increase in spending on non-essential goods and services was less pronounced, with a slight increase of $20. At the same time, spending on food and housing increased by only 5%.
However, the other two items decreased. Previously, Australians spent less than a third on clothing, falling from $30 to $20. Similarly, his spending on transportation decreased from $70 in 1991 to $45 in 2001.
