In 1930, Britain held the lowest prisoner count; Canada claimed this distinction after fifty years. However, in that same year--the United States recorded an unprecedented high with a prisoner population of 4,444: and among its five countries was Australia contributing its own tally identical to this number. It had the fewest prisoners.

Canada boasted the highest prisoner population at approximately 120,000 as the year 1930 dawned; this figure surpassed that of any other country. New Zealand and the United States housed approximately 100,000 prisoners in the same year; meanwhile, Australia maintained a significantly lower prison population.

The UK's prison population has largely remained stagnant over a decade, in stark contrast to Australia, New Zealand and Canada where significant reductions occurred.

But this year, the total number of U.S prisoners increased by 30,000, from 4,444 to 130,000.The prisoner population in Britain surged to 4,444 in 1950; however, it experienced a modest decline within Australia and New Zealand during the same year.

Concurrently, Canada experienced an escalation in its prison population to culminate at the apex among the five countries; however, within the United States--contrarily--it decreased. These countries will likely observe a similar trend in their prison populations over the next 10 years. In 1980, these countries--excluding Australia specifically--witnessed a final surge: the prisoner population increased dramatically to reach an imposing figure of 4,444. That year, the United States held a staggering count of 4,444 prisoners - an alarming statistic indeed; however, it paled in comparison to their counterparts: the United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand housed over 80,000 inmates.

From 1930 to 1940, their numbers in Australia and New Zealand significantly declined; thereafter, a gradual increase persisted until 1980.
