Swimming is a topic in IELTS Speaking Part 1 and it deals with speaking about your likeness for swimming and the culture of swimming in general.

Topic: Swimming

  1. Do you like Swimming?

Answer: Yes, I like swimming very much. It's not just good exercise but also a source of recreation for me especially in Summers because I live in the tropical part of the world where cool water is the best way to beat the heat without hurting the environment through Air Conditioners. Swimming has brought fitness as well as discipline to my life.

Vocabulary:

Recreation: Enjoying and relaxing when one is not working
Tropical: a climate that has high temperature and is frost-free with year-round plant growth

  1. Where do (or can) people go swimming in your hometown (or, near your home)?

Answer: My hometown lies on the confluence of two major rivers of the country, where there is plenty of water to swim and the government has demarcated areas where people can go swimming considering these rivers are dangerous due to their sheer size. Other than that, there are several water parks on the outskirts of my hometown which offer a sophisticated swimming experience but they can get a bit expensive making them an occasional indulgence away from the crowd.

  1. Is Swimming very popular in your country?

Answer: India is a lower-middle-income country with a huge population. So, Swimming isn’t popular in India because the right kind of awareness or encouragement is given to swimming neither as a sport nor as a recreation. However, it is seen as a must-have skill especially if one lives near water because it helps them overcome their water woes that are part of their lives due to their proximity with water bodies. Answer: Many people might like Swimming because of the apparent health benefits that can be derived from this exercise. Swimming is a good source of recreation especially in hot & tropical climatic conditions where cool water is seen as a source of relief from the atmospheric heat.

  1. What do you think are the benefits of Swimming (or, the benefits of knowing how to swim)?

Answer: Swimming has a lot of health benefits like cardiovascular fitness, improvement in endurance, weight loss, muscle training, healthy lungs etc. Apart from that Swimming being a sport inculcates all positive traits of a sportsperson in a swimmer such as team building, decisiveness, goal orientation and discipline etc. Even if one doesn’t swim regularly as a part of their exercise/recreation routine there are benefits of even knowing how to swim such as one can protect themselves and others from drowning or being washed away. Such a person can also be of great help in times of crisis like Floods where rescuers need to know how to swim.

  1. What needs to be done to encourage swimming in your country?

Answer: Swimming is a sport of great significance and it has immense health benefits. To encourage swimming whether as a sport or a leisure activity in India it’s important that swimming should be made part of the School Curriculum which will develop an interest in Swimming from a young age and people will see it as an activity of possibilities due to its association with big sports leagues like Olympics. The culture of community pools, frequent swimming competitions would be helpful in encouraging Swimming. Sports Federation of India is already looking to develop swimming at the grass-roots level as it starts with the development of 20 swimming centers in Odisha.

  1. Do you think senior citizens should take up Swimming?

Answer: Contrary to what one might generally believe, swimming is an activity which senior citizens can also enjoy like anybody else. Senior Citizens should definitely take up swimming as it will help them maintain their cardiovascular and pulmonary health as both of these are growing problems in older people. As people age their mobility begins to decrease but if they take up swimming the problem of immobile joints can be addressed. It will also give the seniors an opportunity to socialize as they have enough leisure after retirement.

  1. Who is your Swimming role model?

Answer: As a swimmer, I admire Arati Saha, the first Asian woman to cross the English Channel. She did this in the 1950s when women in India weren’t all liberated and swimming wasn’t a popular sport even among Men let alone a woman. And these aren’t her only achievements as she went on to the Olympics when only 4 women competed and she was the youngest of them at 12. She is an example of the immense courage and resilience that swimming can develop in a person.

  1. How is Swimming a sustainable hobby?

Answer: Swimming, unlike other sports activities, is a sustainable hobby because it largely depends upon community resources like rivers, lakes, canals, or community pools. To take up swimming one doesn’t need to have expensive equipment as only a swimsuit, goggles and bathing caps will do just fine. So, if one has a skill or is willing to learn they can find a water body, an instructor and some simple equipment to start Swimming.

  1. What is the History of Swimming?

Answer: It's widely believed that Swimming was prevalent in Egypt as early as 2500 BCE and from there on it spread to Roman and Greek civilizations. In old times Swimming was part of war training of soldiers which is where the concept of water warfare and the Navy must have evolved. Swimming has come a long way from being a war tactic to a sport and European Countries have largely contributed to its evolution as a Sport.
