Band 8 IELTS Essay

Schools are a place where students learn academic subjects which prepares them for professional life ahead. This is the basic idea of providing education in school. However, what if a student decides to be a chef or a cricketer, or a fashion designer? This education is not provided in school. In this essay, we will discuss if a student in school should only learn academic subjects and pass the exam.

A student can get overall development by learning both curricular and extra-curricular topics. However, most schools just follow the academic curriculum. So why the schools are not taking up the overall development? Some argue that the burden of teaching academic subjects is itself very high. Completion of the stipulated syllabus in an academic year is very difficult for teachers. Teaching other skills at schools will need extra teachers and extra hours. So, schools should concentrate on academic subjects, and let parents take responsibility for teaching other skills.

Some people also say that crafts should be introduced in schools. According to them, crafts like designing, painting, stitching, and weaving improve the cognitive skills of students. Cognitive skills are required for arithmetic and mathematical skills. So, we cannot dissociate crafts, domestic skills, and cognitive skills from schools and academic curricula. If a student does not learn all the stuff required in life, the education remains incomplete. For overall development and personality improvement, other non-curricular skills will also have to be introduced in school. Students might have an interest in sports, cooking, or fashion design. parents at home do not get time to teach them all these skills. These skills have to be nurtured at school itself. There has been an argument that supports the introduction of domestic skills in educational institutions. According to them, teaching domestic skills both to boys and girls will reduce gender bias among students from childhood itself. All children will get skills and also a sense of equality in society. So, both academic and domestic skills are required, either to be taught in schools or somewhere else. Teaching domestic skills in schools is preferred because there will be separate classes and teachers for these activities. If more emphasis is given to domestic skills, there may be chances of poor performance in academic examinations.

I believe that a balance is to be maintained between academics and extracurricular subjects. It all depends on whether the school is residential, or not. It would always be preferred to introduce domestic skills in residential schools.

Band 7.5 IELTS Essay

Students in a school should learn academic subjects and pass exams is the opinion of one group of people. But, it will not be meant for the overall development. It needs learning both academic skills and domestic skills. It has been a common practice that schools are meant for academic skills only. Now, there is a demand for the introduction of arts and crafts in schools. The argument is whether schools can fulfill both tasks at a time and do justice. The question is whether school teachers are trained well to teach both skills at a time. One more apprehension is that students may reduce interest in academic subjects, and they may score fewer marks in examinations. So, it would be better to concentrate on academic skills in schools and let parents teach domestic skills at home.

Some are of the opinion that domestic skills can be introduced in schools. Cooking, designing, painting, stitching, and weaving subjects can be introduced and made optional subjects. These skills enhance cognitive skills in young brains. Arithmetic and mathematical skills are associated with cognitive skills. Cognitive skills both directly and indirectly improve performance in academic subjects also, especially mathematics. The aim of education is the overall development of a student, not just examinations. Let students relax from boredom and engage themselves in other physical activities. Domestic skills make students fit in all kinds of life skills. Both teachers and students should stop giving more emphasis on byhearting subjects and getting more marks in exams. Introducing domestic skills in schools is very much useful for those students who have working parents.

Some opine that teaching life skills in schools reduce gender bias in society. When both boys and girls learn cooking and other domestic skills they get a feeling of equality. The age-old practice of bias at the domestic level can be curtailed. It is imperative that students should gain knowledge of both academic and cognitive skills. Schedules with separate classes to teach domestic skills are required. Some fear that domestic skills may decrease academic skills among students. It may lead to poor performance in examinations. So, it is concluded that balance is to be maintained.

Band 7 IELTS Essay

A student becomes complete with both academic skills and domestic skills. Then only a student gains the overall development. The question is whether schools have to concentrate on academic skills or both. There is a need for the introduction of arts and crafts in schools, as parents are not getting sufficient time to teach the same at home. One more issue is whether schools can afford that much time and trained teachers for all students. Teaching should be done in such a way that students should not reduce interest in academic subjects. The majority are of the opinion that schools should exclusively be meant for academic subjects and exams.

In modern education policy, the overall development of a student is very important. There is a need for teaching cooking, food preservation, designing, painting, stitching, and weaving at school through a separate curriculum and classes. Students can be given a choice to select any one of the domestic subjects. Domestic skills are physical skills and have an immense effect on cognitive skills. Subjects like mathematics require cognitive skills. So, there will be an improvement in the performance of academic subjects also. The extrovert students will get boosting to enhance their performance and prove their mettle. Overemphasis on marks pushes students into depression. The mindset of both parents and teachers should change.

One more advantage of teaching domestic skills in school reduces gender bias from childhood itself. It will dispel the false notion that domestic work is exclusively meant for girls and women only. If both boys and girls are taught cooking and other domestic work they get a sense of equality. It certainly mitigates gender bias at all levels in society. Hence it is better to impart knowledge of both academic and cognitive skills. Parents, teachers, and government bodies should come together to create an atmosphere where students can acquire both kinds of skills. The measure should be taken in such a way that no one kind of education gets affected due to the other. It is concluded that though academic subjects are more important, domestic skills will also have to be taught to students, either at home or if possible in their schools.
