Band 8 IELTS Essay
This diagram compares the characteristics of two Paleolithic hand axes made by early humans during two different eras of the Stone Age, the Middle and Late. Each axis is given two viewing angles: front and edge. As you can see from the first diagram, Mesolithic axes had irregular blade shapes. Its length was about 6 cm, and the width at the base was relatively small, only about 3.5 cm. The thickness was about 2.5cm. The shape of the edge centerline suggests that one side was thicker than the other.
Focusing on the Late Stone Age axes, we can see changes in the shape and size of the tool. It had a more streamlined triangular shape with a wide base and pointed tip. It was about 1.5 cm longer and about 1 cm thinner than the Mesolithic hatchet. Interestingly, both surfaces had approximately the same thickness.
Overall, the shape of stone hatchets was similar in both periods, although hatchets made in the Upper Paleolithic were relatively smooth and slim.

Comparing the features of two Paleolithic hand axes--one crafted during the Middle Stone Age and another in its later period--offers an insightful view into early human craftsmanship. The diagrams present a dual viewpoint for each axe, illustrating it face-on and edge-on.
The first figure reveals a middle stone age axe with an irregular leaf shape: its length measures approximately 6 cm, and the base width--comparatively smaller--is only around 3.5 cm; furthermore, it boasts a thickness of about 2.5 cm. The middle line's shape in the edge-on view implies an asymmetry: one face possessed greater thickness than its counterpart.
The focus is on the later Stone Age axe, where one can observe changes in its tool's shape and size. The latter exhibits a more streamlined triangular structure with a broad base and pointed tip; moreover, it measures approximately 1.5 cm longer but is also 1 cm. thinner compared to a middle-stone-age hand axe. Both faces exhibited an intriguing similarity in. their thickness.
Both periods exhibited overall similarity in the shapes of their stone hand axe.s; however, craftsmen from the later Paleolithic period notably produced a hand axe that was comparatively smoother and slimmer.

A quick look at the diagram shows that the earlier tools do not resemble functional axes, while the later tools have a more defined shape. A 1.5 million-year-old hand ax was 5 centimeters wide and 5 centimeters thick. This particular Stone Age tool has a rounded tip and a blunt edge, making it less effective than the last Stone Age tool and its descendants. It also exhibits a high degree of roundness due to imperfect carving/engraving techniques.
Later tools are more effective as hunting tools than earlier tools due to their larger size and well-defined shape. A larger area can also be observed in the Neolithic axis. Compared to the previous tool, the new tool is thinner and has a pointer tip and sharp edges Finally, improvements in engraving techniques made tools from this era have smoother external surfaces.
