Topic: Some schools have restricted the use of mobile phones. Is this a positive development or negative one?

Band 8 IELTS Essay

Mobile phones among young people have become highly common nowadays. Teenagers to adult students make use of their mobile phones more often although schools have been restricting its use inside the premises. I believe that restriction of mobile phones in the schools can be a positive development. School is a place where students need to cooperate and communicate with their classmates and teachers. They need to learn not just about academics but also discuss their life.

Mobile phones can be huge distractions for students when they are in a classroom and important discussions take place. Teacher-student communication is highly important within the classroom environment and the presence of mobile phones only creates a barrier. Any kind of message might pop-up and distract the students from being attentive in the class. Many students misuse their mobile phones while attending classes which makes them distracted. Further, it also disturbs the fellow students who want to learn from the class. While the attention of the students are curbed by the use of mobile phones in schools it eventually results in poor performance of the students. However, some people might think that using mobile phones during lunch or break hours may mean no harm. On the other hand, the lunch or break time for students are mainly for leisure activities. Using mobile phones might divert them from the opportunities to play with their friends or simply hang out while discussing serious or funny topics. Communication with friends is disrupted when students tend to induce their attention on their phones. Further, it has been found from research that use of mobile phones constantly increases students' stress rather than playing games or doing leisure activities. Hence, restricting the use of mobile phones can be seen as a positive development.

Band 7.5 IELTS Essay

There are certain schools which have restricted the use of mobile phones within the school campus. I think this is a positive development because it helps students to focus on their learning in the classroom rather than being distracted with mobile phones. It is important to understand that school is a place where students need to focus on their learning and gaining essential knowledge. The use of mobile phones within the school and classroom environment distracts students from important discussions.

They tend not to be focused on the method of learning but rather from the message highlights on their phones. Further, it also becomes difficult for teachers to teach in the class where they find the students are being inattentive. Teacher-student communication is highly disrupted when students are constantly busy with their phones while it disrupts students’ skill development as well. Notjust with teachers but classroom cooperation becomes restricted when too much involvement is endured by students on their phones. Students might be missing out on discussing career goals and opportunities. Students may be so distracted from the class that they might not even be able to curb opportunities to be involved in making change within the school. Essentially restriction of the use of mobile phones would enable more attention, concentration and development of students. They would find themselves being more focused on what is being taught in class while also communicating with their classmates. The friends’ environment is important because that is how important friendships and relationships develop that might go on for the rest of their life. By enhancing social interactions of the students in the classroom they are able to enhance their efficacy in learning. This would simply ensure that students are more engaged with their real life than the virtual one.

Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

Mobile phones or Smartphones came into the world of the millennial like a boon while soon it can also be identified as a means of lack of social engagement. Social media and use of messengers have allowed students even in schools to engage in a virtual world and get detached from reality. This has a huge impact considering that students make use of their mobile phones even while they are attending school. However, certain schools have restricted the use of mobile phones within the school campus, which I feel is a positive development rather than negative.

This is because I feel it is essential for students to understand that in order to engage in the process of learning and enhance their knowledge. Any sort of distraction should be condemned. The use of mobile phones within the school environment is a source of disturbance that students have got hold of which needs to be eliminated. Accordingly, restriction in its use is the only way that students might be able to engage within the classroom activities. Mostly, students who are distracted from their activities on phone miss out on important discussions in the class. Eventually, during exams they find it difficult to cope with the syllabus which affects their performances. Moreover, students should involve themselves in extra-curricular activities which would enable them to learn new skills and improve their existing ones. They should utilize their free time to discuss and interact with their classmates and friends. Making memories in school is important because that is what remains with us when we grow old and have our own career and family. Social interactions help in discussing serious issues as well as having fun which definitely mobile phones do not provide. They are a distraction from real life and affect one’s personal life in many ways. Moreover, students involved too much on their phones tend to develop obesity and mental health issues as well which eventually affects their academic performances. Thus, mobile phones being restricted from the schools can only mean positive correlation among students.
