Topic: Some people think that governments should provide subsidies to farmers to produce cheap healthy food. Others think that governments should tax companies producing unhealthy foods. Give your own opinion and examples.

Model Answer 1:

There is a huge segment of people who think that the government should provide subsidies to farmers to produce good quality crops that will improve the general well-being of the people. But there’s another segment of people who think that instead of subsidies to farmers, governments should tax companies producing unhealthy food, and this will result in reducing the health risk. Before giving an opinion on this subject, it is essential that we explore both views in-depth and then reach a conclusion.

People who are of the opinion that the government should tax companies producing unhealthy food, believe that such a move will force the companies to stop producing such food products because when an item is heavily taxed, it impacts the consumer as well. The price of the food product will also increase, therefore the general expectation is that people will stop buying it or that the demand will go down. But that isn’t always the case. Let’s take for instance Nestle's Maggi which is widely popular across many countries and which is consumed by almost all sections of society. Maggi is a type of instant noodle that has been tagged several times as an unhealthy product and had several extreme claims for which the company even had to take the product off the market. Despite the negative tags, it still remains to be the most loved noodle among young people. Even when there was a price increment, consumers didn’t stop purchasing it. Today people want easy access and instant food. And taxing such food products will not help, as the companies will still produce them.

On the other hand, subsidies will help farmers to lead a secure life. Farmers face a lot of challenges in terms of money and resources. Since they belong mostly to the rural household, they are vulnerable and need to be uplifted, to reduce the inequality which exists in society. People who have been farmers for generations know innately about the soil, crop, the fertilizers which will help the process and about the various farming methods. But with low income and debts, they are forced to leave their fields and move to the city for better opportunities. But if the government provides subsidies to them to produce food quality crops, that can act as an incentive for them to stay back and contribute to the agricultural sector.

Hence, in my opinion, providing subsidies to farmers will have a much greater and positive impact than taxing big companies producing unhealthy foods.

Model Answer 2:

Subsidy started as a way to uplift the people who are vulnerable in society and make sure that they are able to lead a decent lifestyle with the concessions given to them. In most countries, the people involved in farming belong to the most vulnerable section of the society and hence most people believe that the government should provide them subsidies to produce better quality food as they cannot afford the latest technology to better their farming techniques. There is another set of people who think taxing companies for producing unhealthy food is a way to ensure the good quality of food generated.

Farmers endure various risks that can disrupt their crop production or destroy all the crops produced. With such high risks, if the government doesn’t provide subsidies then these farmers will go bankrupt. Also, according to the weather, the price of the crops keeps fluctuating which again puts their income at risk. So providing subsidies in a way saves the nation’s food supply and ensures every individual is able to afford a healthy meal.

On the other hand, some think the government should tax companies for producing unhealthy food. Taxing them heavily will surely act as a deterrent but doesn’t ensure that they will switch to healthy foods. The government should simultaneously work on warning people of the health risks when one consumes such products.

In my opinion, the government should provide subsidies to farmers to produce good quality cheap crops, as it will lead to overall welfare in terms of protecting the farmers, increasing crop production, and also ensuring everyone is able to afford healthy food. But the government should also start warning people of the unhealthy foods which they eat in large quantities so that when such companies are taxed, it would compel them to take some actions in the right direction.

Model Answer 3:

In most countries, subsidies are a way to protect those who can be easily suppressed and taken advantage of. Farmers are one such section of people who need to be protected and also should be encouraged to stay in this occupation. Since people who are involved in farming are generally poor and belong to rural households, they at times move to the city for better employment opportunities. If this continues to happen, then there will be insufficient food supply and also lead to poor quality food. So, subsidies are a way to ensure agricultural welfare and protect the farmers.

In India, the Government provides subsidies to farmers to protect them from exploitation. Agriculture is a very important part of any economy and because it’s through farming the nation receives its food supply. But since most farmers belong to rural households and the majority are illiterate, the government of India has various schemes to protect them from debts and encourage new farming techniques and offer various subsidies so that there is a good harvest every year. Agriculture is a very important sector and since a national food supply depends on it, it is crucial that the government provide them be benefits and also protect them from going bankrupt, as crop harvesting is largely dependent on the climate and many a times crops get destroyed due to floods, cyclone and other natural disasters which the farmers cannot control. Hence, it’s always a gamble for them and they should be protected at all costs.

Other people are of the opinion that the government should tax companies producing unhealthy food. Now here we first need to understand the goal of taxation and subsidies. Subsidies are provided to encourage and protect vulnerable farmers. And the agenda behind taxing companies is to make them rethink their ways of production and change them to healthy food products. But taxing doesn’t ensure that they would stop generating the food products they are already producing and if such unhealthy food is highly profitable for the company, then taxing such companies wouldn’t make them rethink their product.

But subsidies will guarantee that farmers are protected and it will lead to better farming techniques, good quality crops, better harvesting methods, and also encouraging more and more people to engage in farming, thus expanding the nation’s food supply and also the surplus could be exported to other countries and make the economy flourish. Therefore, in my opinion, the government should focus on providing subsidies to farmers to produce cheap healthy food so that everyone can afford a healthy meal.
