TOPIC: Many people believe that schools should teach children to become good citizens and workers rather than independent individuals. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give your own opinion and relevant examples.

MODEL ANSWER 1:

Schools play a very important role in the lives of young children. Many people believe that schools are responsible for teaching their students to become good and responsible citizens of the country. I am completely in favour of this argument.

Children spend a lot of time in schools. Thus, it is the responsibility of every institution to imbibe feelings of empathy, honesty and morality in each child. If these feelings are properly nurtured, the children will definitely grow up to become responsible citizens of the nation and would try to contribute to its growth and development. These children would try to show their appreciation by giving back whatever they can to the country. For example, many children would join the National School Scouts and help in providing aid to the regions that have been affected by natural calamities like floods and earthquakes.

On the other hand, the Government invests a huge sum of the tax-payer’s money in the education of the young minds of the nation. It also provides free education to the children belonging to underprivileged families. Thus, if the schools raise selfish and greedy children who are willing to exploit the nation for their own personal benefits, then, the entire education system would collapse. It would ultimately have a negative impact on the people of that nation. Criminal activities including corruption would be on the rise and economic development would be negligible. For example, if talented doctors of a nation simply treat patients with an aim of making money, then, many poor people might not be able to receive any sort of healthcare due to lack of resources. Thus, the doctors are putting the lives of these poor patients at risk. Ultimately, it is the society that will suffer from the consequences.

In conclusion, it can be said that it is the moral responsibility of each and every school to encourage feelings of responsibility and empathy in the children, so that they can become good and enlightened citizens of the nation in the future.

MODEL ANSWER 2:

Undoubtedly, all schools have a moral responsibility of raising children to become good and responsible citizens of the nation. However, in my opinion, it should not be done at the cost of their individuality.

The children spend an extensive part of their childhood in schools. Therefore, the schools must always encourage the children to explore their creativity and make use of it. The development of a child’s personality has a positive impact on both the individual and the nation. For example, most of the leaders of the country were creative thinkers, poets, scientists and artists. Thus, if the schools fail to encourage independent thinking and creativity among the children, then, the nation will suffer as a whole.

Encouraging the children to develop their own personalities does not necessarily make them irresponsible citizens of the country. It also does not prove the level of patriotism they have for their own country. For example, some of the greatest patriots of history were independent and creative thinkers.

Schools should always find scope to develop the personality of the children because it helps in boosting their confidence. For example, according to a survey published by CNN in 2014, educated people tend to be more successful and self-confident. It helps them handle pressure and cope up with all types of difficulties that may cross their paths. Strong and confident children will always be able to make right decisions for themselves. They would also be more willing to take up responsibilities and thus, become more successful in their lives. They also do not easily fall prey to mental illnesses like depression.

In my opinion, education is the backbone of every nation in the world. A well-educated person always proves to be an important asset to the country. Therefore, the schools should focus on developing the personality of the children. This is because encouraging the children to become good human beings will, in turn, make them responsible and good citizens of the country. Thus, both of these aspects are intertwined.

MODEL ANSWER 3:

Schools are often known as a second home to children. This is because a huge portion of their childhood is spent in schools. Thus, the kind of education imparted by the schools is very important for the children. Many people are of the view that the main purpose of schools should be to make the children good citizens of the nation. However, in my opinion, this should not be the sole purpose of education in schools.

Schools have a moral responsibility of teaching the children to become good and responsible citizens of the nation. They must teach values like honesty, empathy and integrity to the children. These values, if nurtured, will help the children grow into responsible citizens who would try to work for the benefit of the society in general. For example, many children would join the National School Scouts and help in providing aid to the regions that have been affected by natural calamities like floods and earthquakes. Proper education will also help in the reduction in the rate of crimes and ultimately, result in the creation of a safer society. The schools must focus on making the children more economically independent by making the latter more competent and skilled. For example, in Bangladesh, the employment rate is nearly 30% higher for students who have been trained in vocational courses.

In addition to making children economically productive, the schools should also focus on the personality development of children. Individuality helps people to stand out in the crowd. It helps to boost their confidence levels and make them strong and independent personalities. For example, according to a survey published by CNN in 2014, educated people tend to be more successful and self-confident. It allows them to distinguish between right and wrong and thus, make correct and sensible decisions for themselves. It is important to develop the personality of children as it allows them to successfully handle pressure and tackle all sorts of difficulties in their lives. Personality development tends to make the children happier and consequently, become less prone to mental illnesses, for example, depression.

In conclusion, it can be said that the schools should always focus on the all-round development of the child. It should try to raise them to be good individuals as well as responsible citizens of the country.
