Topic: Some people think that schools should reward students who show the best academic results while others believe that it is more important to reward students who show improvements. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Band 7 IELTS Essay

While a section in our society believes that students who perform well in academic exams must be rewarded well, another section argues the importance of rewarding and encouraging students who are improving. Such students on seeing that they are being recognized for their work will get the motivation to work harder and excel further.

The reason why some people argue that it is important to reward high-scoring students is that they believe that this will force the average students to try harder to score well in the hopes of getting rewarded too. The students who show the best academic results will tend to become more focused and hardworking on receiving appreciation and rewards. It is said that the system of providing marks for exams is nothing but a system to encourage the pupils to either try harder in academics or to keep up the consistency. Toppers have confessed that marks do help them stay motivated to try harder and score better than their previous scores.

But is it just enough to reward students who show the best academic results? Not every student at different academic levels will feel motivated to reach the top to be rewarded in such a rewarding system. That is why rewarding and encouraging students who are trying hard to improve is also very important. Such students may give up fast without the right motivation thinking that they are incapable of getting good academic results.

Students who are not good at studies but are trying hard to improve must be encouraged well to make them want to try harder and show their best results. It is human tendency to perform ten times better when they are encouraged and rewarded. The University of Mumbai conducted a study to prove the same and found out that around 89% of the students of the academically weaker levels were willing to try and perform better when their teachers and parents started showing faith in them.

Thus, it is important to appreciate both the students that score the best marks on academic exams and also those students that are trying hard to improve to show their best results.

Band 7.5 IELTS Essay

In the olden time, students who scored the best in the academic exams were always the ones that got rewarded. A system of giving proficiency prizes for the top scorer in a class is something that still exists in most schools. While there are people who believe this is the system that must be followed, there are a lot of others who stress the importance of rewarding and encouraging students of all academic levels. Here is an analysis of both these viewpoints along with opinions of my own.

Rewarding the best academically performing student in a class makes sense of course. This not only encourages the student to work harder to keep with the consistency but may also encourage other students especially the ambitious students to get to that level so they will be rewarded too. This is one way of motivating the students and making them work hard to score their best in academic examinations.

But is the above method that effective? Not all students may get motivated to reach the top by following such a rewarding method. Some may even give up trying harder as they are not taught to believe in themselves and have faith but instead somehow reach the top. Also by rewarding the top scorers in a class, the system is teaching the students to be competitive which may instil a toxic mentality among the students.

This is why a lot of people believe that students that are showing improvements and are trying harder must also be encouraged and motivated. If students are rewarded for improving their academic scores, all the students will equally try to better themselves and may also help their peers out to improve their scores. So, not only will such a rewarding system make students try and improve their scores but it may also lead to improving their personalities and instil a helping mentality in them.

To conclude, I personally believe that it is better to reward students in the latter way as it encourages students to have a healthier academic competition. Either way, rewarding individuals for their achievements is a very important system that must be followed to inspire the students to better themselves.

Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

In this era in which getting achievements play a very important role, rewards are seen to provide strength to students to perform well and make themselves better. There are many that stand by the conventionally followed idea of rewarding the top scorers in a class while a lot of people now argue the importance of rewarding students that are trying to improve themselves too. This essay tries to analyze both the arguments and their implications before coming to a conclusion.

Adolescent kids are seen to depend on rewards to move forward and motivate themselves. They provide the students, the strength to try harder and work better to bring their best results. There is no one that does not enjoy getting rewards and appreciation and they act as an encouragement to have better faith in themselves. So when just the top scorers are rewarded, other average-performing students who are trying to improve themselves may feel demotivated and discouraged. This can cause serious issues like insecurities in young adolescent students.

This is the reason why many now argue how important it is to reward the less performing students too in a class instead of discouraging them to get better. Seeing that there are people that have faith in such kids will force them to be their better selves and perform better in academic exams.

It is also important to reward and show a token of appreciation for those who come to the top in academic exams and similar competitive exams. Such appreciation will make them want to stay consistent and keep working hard for their future endeavors. Such kids if guided correctly may become someone who has a key role to play in our world in the future.

In conclusion, I personally think that it is essential to encourage and reward all kinds of students equally. All kids in one way or the other are better than their peers and each may have a unique quality for which they must be praised and encouraged. At the academic level too, both the deserving and the hardworking must be rewarded to motivate and inspire them to perform better and to keep competing with their own self. So schools should not only reward kids that score the best in academic exams but also those who are improving and trying their best to score better.
