COURSE GUIDELINES
2.1 Assignments
Coursework assignments will involve the production of an artefact (something
shaped by human beings rather than by nature) OR an investigation of some kind
followed by a report. This is to demonstrate the relevance of your study to society
today. If you opt to produce an artefact, (e.g. a working model or piece of
machinery) you will also be expected to provide some written explanation of how
and why you produced it.
You need to follow these steps:
syllabus document.
much time you can seriously devote to it.
Choosing a topic
Remember that this course is essentially concerned with the achievement of
desired ends. So first identify a real-life problem, then consider it in detail, specify
a precise need and then define your design task. As you plan, wherever possible,
consider using new materials, techniques and technology such as computer-
aided design (CAD).
There is nothing wrong with talking to knowledgeable people about your project;
in fact, this shows initiative. However, the project is yours so you must do the
work yourself.
You will need a fairly flexible plan because sometimes resources, apparatus and
consumables may not be available when you need them. It is a good idea to work
backwards when planning so you know you will meet your final deadline. Finally,
when you plan the various stages of your project give due regard to safety and
costs.
Solution and Explanation
Questions 21-26
Look at the Course Guidelines for students on how to approach a design project.
Complete the sentences below using NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. Write your answers in boxes 21-26.
Answer: TWO
Supporting Sentence: Coursework assignments will involve the production of an artefact (something shaped by human beings rather than by nature) OR an investigation of some kind followed by a report.
Keywords: production of an artefact, an investigation of some kind
Keyword Location: Paragraph – 1, lines 1-3.
Explanation: The first paragraph clearly states about two types of assignments. The first is a creation of an artifact which is a product molded by humans as opposed to nature. And the other is an investigation with a report-writing process. Any one of these will be required for coursework assignments.
Answer: A WRITTEN EXPLANATION
Supporting Sentence: If you opt to produce an artefact, (e.g. a working model or piece of machinery) you will also be expected to provide some written explanation of how and why you produced it.
Keywords: working model, some written explanation
Keyword Location: Paragraph – 1, lines 4-6.
Explanation: The first paragraph ends with an important note. It is that you will also be required to provide a written justification for your decision to produce an artefact that can serve as a working model. So it is important that if you are choosing to create a model of machinery or artifact, make sure to create a document that describes why you chose this specific one.
Answer: THE SYLLABUS DOCUMENT
Supporting Sentence: Find out precisely what is expected of you. Talk to your tutor and refer to the syllabus document.
Keywords: syllabus document
Keyword Location: Paragraph – 2, first point.
Explanation: The second paragraph consists of three important points. They help you to understand the assignment’s purpose. One of the foremost factors is that the students should read the syllabus document to understand the purpose completely. This helps them to understand the project they are wrong clearly and come up with the best results.
Answer: A REAL-LIFE PROBLEM
Supporting Sentence: Remember that this course is essentially concerned with the achievement of desired ends. So first identify a real-life problem
Keywords: essentially concerned, real-life problem
Keyword Location: Paragraph – 3, lines 1-3.
Explanation: The third paragraph explains something crucial for the students. They have to keep in mind that the main focus of this course is on achieving objectives. Therefore, they have to choose a real-world issue, think about it in detail, identify a specific need, and then specify the design task.
Answer: WORK PLAN BACKWARDS
Supporting Sentence: It is a good idea to work backwards when planning so you know you will meet your final deadline
Keywords: work backwards, final deadline
Keyword Location: Paragraph – 5, lines 2-3.
Explanation: The fifth paragraph mentions a plan. You will need a plan that is reasonably flexible because resources, equipment, and consumables might not always be available when you need them. When planning, it is a good idea to go backwards so you can be sure you will meet your ultimate deadline.
Answer: SAFE
Supporting Sentence: Finally, when you plan the various stages of your project give due regard to safety and costs.
Keywords: plan, safety
Keyword Location: Paragraph – 5, lines 3-4.
Explanation: The last paragraph ends with an important point. When planning the various stages of the project, it is crucial to choose a project with correspondence to safety. Whatever it is, safety has to be the first and primary concern to prevent any consequences that could be controversial or fatal.
