Topic: Some people say that in all levels of education, from primary schools to universities, too much time is spent on learning facts and not enough on learning practical skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Band 7 IELTS Essay

I believe that people learn from experiences. This experience comes from the hands-on practice of what the world ahead waits for us. Hence, learning practical skills is very important. They are becoming a part of the new education policy in the world. The thrust on imparting skills is as essential as educating in theories. Practical knowledge is nothing but a valuable addition to the existing theoretical knowledge. Practical knowledge is the manifestation of theories in practical life. Elders often say that practical knowledge is far more important than theoretical knowledge.

I believe that practical knowledge is important but a student should have a base of theoretical knowledge also. practical education and knowledge should not be provided separately. They should be embedded with theoretical knowledge. For example, students who have a strong base of theories and have learned the application of the same are seen to be the cherries for the companies. They pick those candidates as they do notr need to waste their resources training them. Practical knowledge has now been emphasized by the private schools and also the government is now putting a thrust on it. In the era of liberalization, it would not be an exaggeration to say that practical knowledge has gained weightage over the experience only of theories. The challenge here is that the parents and teachers are being reluctant to the change which is occurring nowadays. They often show fanatic faith in the traditional way of teaching. The traditional methodology of education has lacked to provide adequate practical knowledge to students. The study suggests that college students are struggling in their academics because the undergraduate or postgraduate curriculum emphasizes more on practical knowledge. To meet this requirement the universities also envision internship or placement cells in the universities to provide practical exposure to the students.

I believe that in all levels of education and in all fields of life, practical knowledge provides experience. Theoretical knowledge provides the base to implement those practical skills. Hence, both are important and education system should involve both in their cirriculam.

Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

In the era of globalization and competition, acquiring jobs has become one of the major competing fields. Therefore, to become self-reliant, students can earn their daily living wages if school students should couple their theoretical skills with practical skills.

In this debate, often, vocational training always supports the foregoing argument. The vocation training means preparing the students for jobs that are on the basis of practical activities. This practice is mandatory in several developed countries including South Korea and Japan. By resorting to these progressive policies students find themselves in a position where they are not solely dependent on the job givers i.e. the employers and they are more self-reliant in this matter. In addition to this, it is observed that the students who are taken actively in vocational training are found to be more creative and skilled in contrast to the rest of the students. These students are proven to be healthier, physically and mentally in both aspects. The schools should imbibe practical learning as an inbuilt part of the education policy. For example in India, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) strives for prioritising practical education rather than theoretical education. The students who opt for streams of Physics, Chemistry or Biology, and Information Technology, need to qualify for the practical examination including in order qualifying the class. This thrust on practical education is a testimonial to the fact that modernization has tingled the need for practical education and has been proven a boon to the holistic development of students.

Band 6 IELTS Essay

School education is the base of the building of the student's future, the height of the building depends on the strong base. Therefore it is a prerequisite that extra attention must be paid to school Education.

Education should strive for the holistic development of the students rather than focusing on good grades in school. The theoretical education should be beautifully coupled with the applications of the same. The school administration must endeavor for the development of students rather than growth. Development means intellect and physical growth, in contrast to just physical growth as in the definition of growth. Development of the children is actually quite predictable from the school time, as the knowledge which is being imparted to the children. This is the testimony of the future of the students. So, to develop a student’s overall growth it becomes important for the schools to focus on practical education apart from traditional education, i.e. focusing on the theoretical knowledge and completely ignoring the practical aspects of the knowledge gained. School administration can opt for training drives to teach the implications of bookish knowledge in the practical world. Similar initiatives will be able to teach the students the overall growth of the child and not only focus on just one dimension of education. Education must cover all the dimensions of knowledge, Practical and theoretical, theories teach what and why of the topics while practical knowledge teaches how this gained knowledge is applied in the real world. The critical analysis of contemporary school education reveals that schools emphasize only on the customary practice of education to avoid the cost of infrastructure creation and lack of trained staff for this noble cause, but at what cost? The future of the student is at the stake. As the stake is highly valuable therefore the government should put a thrust on providing the students with a holistic education, comprising both the form of education and step forward to provide assistance to the private institutions.
