Road Safety IELTS writing task 2 cconsists of three sample answers provided below. The task requires the candidates to provide a tentative and argumentative answer for the question. The sample answers comprises two parts: Introduction and body. The introduction is a brief description about the topic. The body contains argumentative statements and tentative answers to support the test-taker's perspective.

Topic: Some people think that the best way to increase road safety is to increase the minimum legal age for driving a car or motorbike. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many are of the opinion that raising the age at which people can get driving licenses is the best way to make roads safer. Although this will help prevent some accidents due to inexperience, I strongly feel that it is more important to focus on safer roads through improved urban planning.
In the USA, most teenagers get their driving permits around age 16. There are a couple of factors that can lead a 16-year-old to cause more accidents than someone in their 20s. The first is that they simply do not have as much road experience. They have only dealt with a limited number of experiences and are more likely to make poor decisions at pivotal moments. The other reason is that many American teenagers begin drinking alcohol around this age even though the legal age is 21. Teenagers are notoriously irresponsible and they have not developed strategies for handling alcohol when driving. All people, when drunk, are dangerous but it is especially dangerous if they are inexperienced in terms of both alcohol and driving.
Even though these are valid points, I do not think they outweigh the number of accidents that poor urban planning and infrastructure cause. There will always be other causes that include young drivers, driving while under the influence, and road rage but the only factor that plays a hand in nearly all accidents relate to how the roads have been planned. Take the city of New Orleans for example. The urban planners in New Orleans constructed the city with almost entirely one-way streets. This may make it inconvenient at times but it has also resulted in one of the lowest accident rates in the USA. It has also allowed for the construction of parallel streetcars that have also greatly reduced the number of accidents. Cities around the world have replicated this approach by increasing the number of one-way streets and working streetcars into the city plan and have seen reciprocal declines in vehicular accidents. I believe that urban planning, despite not being a well-publicized cause, is the main source of most accidents around the world, and raising the legal driving age would have little real impact.

When it comes to making our roads safer, people have differing opinions. To promote better driving habits, both punishments and a range of other measures can be used. In addition to showing dangerous drivers that their actions have negative consequences, these punishments also serve to deter them. We hope that, as a result, drivers will become more attentive and disciplined as well as follow the rules more closely. Meanwhile, I think there are several ways to promote safe driving that do not penalize drivers. It is critical to educate people properly before they begin to drive, and this can be done in school or even as part of a longer or more difficult driving test. In addition, safer road designs could be given more attention. Traffic signs, speed bumps, and road bends can be used to reduce traffic speeds, as well as speed cameras to prevent people from driving too fast. Last but not least, governments or local councils could reduce road accidents by investing in better public transport, which would reduce the need for people to drive. Increasing the legal age of driving would only allow mature and responsible people to drive on the streets. Moreover, this would also ensure to keep the people on regular checks regarding their age of driving and not allowing underage to drive teir cars or bikes. In conclusion, I believe that other measures should be introduced in addition to punishments to prevent bad driving.

The most efficient method to control road safety in today's society is to raise the legal driving age. While I accept that this method has some undeniable effects, I would argue that there are more appropriate solutions to tackle this problem.
To begin with, numerous incidents are caused by young drivers every year. The main reason is that those drivers are not mature enough to understand the consequences of their careless driving and are also inexperienced to handle unpredictable situations on the road. Therefore, by raising the driving age, authorities can make sure that even the youngest drivers are aware of their responsibility for their own lives and other people’s lives when driving. People who drink and drive should be subject to heavy fines, and their licenses should also be taken away if they relapse. Another solution is upgrading the public transportation system. Mass transit could, for example, speed up vehicle boarding or reduce travel fares to attract more passengers, which would reduce the number of private vehicles traveling at the same time to an acceptable level. This may prevent drivers and pedestrians from being involved in unfortunate traffic accidents. By increasing the age of driving, it would be possible to prevent rash driving, road accidents and even keep the people safer and more aware regarding the importance of their lives. In conclusion, raising the minimum legal driving age may help reduce traffic accidents, but harsher punishments and better public transportation still provide better road safety.
