Topic: Over the last centuries, reading, writing and maths are the three recognized traditional subjects. Nowadays, as computers become more important, some people believe that every child should be taught computer skills as the fourth subject. Do you agree or disagree?

Model Answer 1:

With technological advancements, the one thing which changed all our lives is the extensive use of computers in every field. Today, we require computers for the most basic of works and without them, we feel crippled. Individuals without computer knowledge face a lot of difficulties now, as everything is becoming online from paying the necessary bills to calling experts for repair work.

Previously, the school curriculum was designed in a way that children could cultivate the skills and use them in their professional lives in the future. Maths, reading, and writing were the basic skills that were required for any individual to find a decent job. But today we’re seeing a paradigm shift. The most basic skill nowadays is to be adept in computer skills. With technological advancements, nowadays every individual can use computers and so do schools. Parents these days want to ensure that the school has a well-equipped computer lab and then look at other entities because our parent’s generation has themselves felt the skill gap at their workplace where they weren’t skilled at using a computer which disrupted their work in many ways, or which lead to they being dependent on others for the most basic work.

Looking at the present-day scenario, I think it’s time for the schools to look at their curriculum and make the necessary changes. Maths, reading, and writing are still essential skills but the curriculum also should include computers, as all the above skills are better conveyed when computerized. Today most writing takes place on google documents or Microsoft word rather than pen and paper. Nowadays, students read more things online than from books and most mathematical functions are stored and carried out by computers. Therefore, incorporating computer science as a subject in the academic curriculum is of utmost importance as without this skill moving ahead would be rather cumbersome.

I’m totally in agreement with the fact that computer skills should be taught as the fourth subject apart from the 3 traditional subjects, as its importance will keep increasing in our daily lives and soon there will come a day when everything will be computerized.

Model Answer 2:

Computer knowledge is not only an important skill but rather a necessary skill to sustain in today’s world. With the advent of the internet, individuals can connect from any part of the world, thus making the world a global village. Today, most schools understand how crucial computer education is to young minds and strive to structure a curriculum that will help them cultivate essential skills which can be useful in their professional life. I strongly agree with the notion of teaching computer skills as the fourth subject due to its growing importance.

Teaching computer skills, in addition to the 3 traditional subjects, will help in gaining more knowledge through browsing different educational platforms which are present on the Internet. Knowing such skills will help a student to unlock the wide repository of knowledge that is available free of cost, to enhance their mental growth. Today, one can get access to the best teachers and study material via computer, so without having the necessary skills to operate it, a student would be at a disadvantage. For instance, the pandemic was the greatest example of how essential computer skills are. Without online education, students would miss out the whole academic year on the global pandemic. But with the help of computers, students were able to attend regular classes and submit their daily assignments. Individuals who didn’t have a basic understanding of computer operations faced a lot of difficulties during the pandemic, as everything had become computerized. This shows us just how important it is to include computer education in the academic curriculum.

Today every employment opportunity requires an individual to have a good understanding of computers to carry out regular business in the company. More than 80% of job applicants today have computer literacy, therefore lacking in this domain is a clear disadvantage. Thus, it is essential to learn this skill in-depth as it will help in individual growth.

Model Answer 3:

Students are always told to focus on the 3 traditional subjects to accomplish great things in life. The holy trinity namely maths, reading, and writing were considered to be essential skills that ensured a wide range of opportunities but today as much as they are important, they are other skills that hold precedence. Computer knowledge in the current age and time is a skill without which other skills cannot be put to use.

Today all skills are undervalued if an individual doesn’t have the essential computer skills, as everything is happening with the help of computers. Computer literacy is the most primary knowledge which one is expected to get skilled at, to move ahead in life. There are several reasons to believe that teaching computer skills as a fourth subject is becoming a necessity.

Firstly, since everyone has to learn computers in some way or the other, it is best if taught in a structured way and get certified, as then the skill can be presented with more credibility. We use such skills in the most basic of things today, for example- paying bills, writing assignments, giving online exams, connecting with people across the world, and many others. Today, a strong resume should include basic computer skills of google analytics and domain-centric computer skills which will help in the smooth functioning of the company. Today every domain has a digital aspect to it which requires a good understanding of computer skills. The digital aspect is gaining more importance with every passing year with an increase in the number of internet users.

Secondly, computers can store immense amounts of data and are accessible anywhere, unlike books. Computer skills can help students gain access to the storehouse of knowledge and learn more efficiently. The Internet allows students to learn any skill and follow their passion. For instance, today one can sit at home and learn a musical instrument through youtube videos uploaded by experts. Every skill can be developed and improved online but to be able to do that one needs basic knowledge of browsing which is an important computer skill.

Lastly, today we can connect with different individuals in different parts of the world and exchange ideas and learn to develop ourselves. But to be able to connect smoothly and exchange ideas with ease we need a basic understanding of social media platforms which is yet another computer skill. Therefore we see that computer skills are essential in the development and the growth of every individual in the present time. So, the educational institutes should make the necessary changes in their curriculum to ensure students are skilled to face the real world.
