Band 8 IELTS Essay

The amount of packaged food being sold has significantly increased recently. Chemical preservatives are added to processed foods to extend their shelf life, but these additives are very bad for our health. The benefits and drawbacks of including them in our diets will be covered in this essay.

The first benefit of using chemicals in processed foods is that they can be kept for longer periods of time. In other words, preservatives protect the food from bacterial or fungal contamination so that it won't spoil and will still look good. A chemical compound called sodium benzoate, for instance, is used to preserve a variety of foods, including jams, drinks, and salads. The flavour and appearance of pre-made foods are improved by adding these substitutes, which is another advantage. As an illustration, the common food colouring agent meta nil yellow gives sweets their bright yellow hue.

While artificial colourants and preservatives have many advantages, they also have some disadvantages. First off, manufacturers who are uneducated and illiterate and have no idea how to use these additives safely are the ones who use them most frequently. The health of the consumer would be negatively impacted by their addition in such large amounts. For instance, artificial food dyes, which are used to intensify the colours of foods, may be cancer-causing, per a research study. Additionally, these ingredients enhance the appearance of restaurants, bringing in more business and boosting profit margins. Because of this, some retailers purposefully carry out this task while playing with the public's safety.

In conclusion, even though there are some drawbacks related to these food additives, there are far more benefits than drawbacks. My opinion is that there would be little risk to our health and we could get the most benefits possible from these substances if the government implemented strict rules and regulations regarding their use and raised public awareness.

Band 7.5 IELTS Essay

In the fast-paced modern world, people have busy schedules and long working hours. Thus, they prefer canned food to home-made meals. However, these packaged foods contain preservatives and chemicals that can leave serious impacts on the health of the consumers.

The preservatives and chemicals added in ready-made meals can greatly hamper the health of all individuals. This is because such packaged foods are prepared by illiterate and ignorant folks who might add chemicals that are far beyond the permissible limits. This might result in health problems like cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. For example, researches have revealed food colourants are carcinogenic in nature. The packaged foods are also deficient in nutrition. The canned foods are higher in calories and are mostly rich in fats, sugar and oils.

Thus, they lack important vitamins and minerals that are necessary for the human body. This causes obesity in most of the consumers across the globe. For example, numerous researches around the world have revealed that around 13 percent of the world population are overweight. Thus, it greatly decreases the lifespan of the consumers. Moreover, it leads to a number of other health challenges that might impact the long-term lifestyle of individuals. In addition to that, it might impact the upcoming generations as these might be inherited by their children.

For example, researches have revealed how the use of artificial dyes and colourants in packaged foods can result in cancer. The consumption of packaged foods is also one of the main reasons for increase in the overall weight of the consumers. In conclusion, it can be said that the preservatives added in processed and ready-made meals. It increases the shelf life of the food products by preventing bacterial and fungal contamination. Yet, in my opinion, the adverse impacts of the same on the health of the individuals. Far outweighs the positive impacts of adding preservatives and chemicals to ready-made or packaged food products.

Band 6 IELTS Essay

In the present world, the food manufacturers are rapidly increasing their production of packaged and ready-made foods. These canned foods contain several chemicals and preservatives. In my opinion, the addition of preservatives and chemicals to processed foods has several advantages. The packaged foods containing chemicals can be stored for a longer duration of time.

This is because the added preservatives prevent any form of bacterial or fungal contamination. All processed meals contain chemicals and preservatives which will help in increasing the shelf life of the products.

This implies that packaged or ready-made food products can be stored for a longer duration without any form of fungal or bacterial contamination. For example, the chemical, sodium benzoate that is added to a wide variety of food products. Like jams, beverages and salads, it helps in the preservation of canned foods for long periods of time. Thus, the packaged food products can be stored and transported to long distances. The preservatives added in packaged foods enhances the flavor or taste of the food. The artificial colourants, in fact, make the food more appealing and delicious.

For example, metanil yellow is a common food colourant that is often used in preparing sweets and gives it a bright yellow colour. As a result, the consumers will tend to consume more of the food product and consequently, increase the profit margins of the food manufacturers. In addition to that, added preservatives are also responsible for prevention of microbial growth on the food contents and eateries. These preservatives are also responsible for prevention of growth of molds, yeasts and other several kinds of bacteria. Furthermore, canned foods usually take less time to prepare as compared to home-made meals.

This is quite useful for modern-day workers who have busy schedules and long office hours. For example, Maggi usually takes 2 minutes to prepare. In conclusion, it can be said that in spite of the adverse health impacts on the consumers. The consumption of packaged foods can be quite beneficial in limited amounts.
