The flow chart above shows us the process of recycling waste paper. There are 6 stages in the process from the collection to the production. Let’s look at the different steps incudes- First, the waste paper is collected from different public places where the people leave or throw away used paper. All of these papers are then separated into different sections according to their grade by hand, and any paper that is deemed not recyclable is removed. After this process is done, the selected papers are transported to the mill.

According to the flow chart, the 4th and 5th stages involve cleaning and pulping, while all foreign and extra items such as staples, tapes, etc. are removed. After this, any remains of ink or glue are also removed through the de-inking stage. After all, this is done, the result is attained, that is, usable paper. To mention a little more in detail, used paper is put into a huge tank that contains water and chemicals, the pulp is filtered by putting them through barrels which have holes in them, this helps in separating the pulp from any impurities it had, which is left in the barrel. The whole process above is the process of waste paper recycling.

Paper recycling is known to be a very demanding service in many businesses, especially nowadays where recycling and reusing have become a necessity in order to save our environment. Paper is the most recycled paper in the world and using the scraps of the same to make new paper things benefit the economy greatly. And the good thing is almost all kinds of paper are recyclable except a few which aren’t possible to recycle like craft envelopes, tissues, wrappers, etc. The easiest and most economical way to collect is through commercial and industrial sources. The collection is the first and the main step in the recycling process. Those which are acceptable to be recycled are separated and kept apart from other waste materials as if they are contaminated they go to waste. All the marked and accepted paper is transported to recycling plants for the process to be carried forward. In the plant, the different types of papers are sorted into groups such as cardboard, magazines, newspapers, etc. as different types are treated differently according to their make. Then comes the pulping stage, the paper is converted into slush and all the contaminants like staples, glass, plastic, etc. are removed. The paper fibers are cleaned and the pulp is filtered through holes of different sizes to ensure there isn’t any contaminant left.

Then, to increase the white color and purity, it goes through a process called de-inking which includes actions like shredding and adding chemicals. The paper which is taken out is dissolved in water and then the ink is removed in a process called flotation where the air is blown and bubbles rise. After the ink is removed the fibers are bleached with a solution like hydrogen peroxide. In the final stage after all this, the cleaned pulp is obtained to be used to manufacture new paper, it is combined with wood fibers to make them stronger and smoother. The pulp is mixed with warm water and chemicals, then poured into a box of papermaking devices and the process goes on to make newly produced paper.

When one understands that almost all types of paper can be recovered and reused to make new paper, we understand just how important it is to be a part of this movement.

The recycling process involves many steps. Some of them are includes- Collecting the waste- of course, this one is the most important, everything starts here. One needs to understand the types of papers that can be recycled and the types which can be avoided. As long as something hasn’t been treated with plastic coating or in contact with greasy substances, it should be fine to recycle. Sorting it- One needs to make sure the recyclable fiber is separated from the contaminated ones. Shredding- Once the papers have been marked and approved, they are sent through the shredder to make the process easier. De-inking- this is to make sure any ink or substances are removed from the papers. In this process, the paper is passed through chemicals. The deinked paper is soaked in hot water and a pulp known as “slush” is created. This is passed through a second check through many holes to make sure all contaminants are removed to preserve the purity of the pulp. The fibers are strengthened and the elasticity is improved. It is sent through various machines to be pressed and rolled into sheets of different thicknesses. And that is how used paper is recycled to create more paper, leading to a sustainable life and a decrease in waste.
