Topic: The diagram below depicts the development of cutting tools that were used in the stone age. One of these was made 1.4 million years ago and the other one approximately 800 years ago. (The diagram shows the front, side, and back view of the tool.) Summarize all the important points including the main features and also make comparisons wherever necessary.

Band 6.5 Answer 

The above diagram focuses on the stone tools that were used during ancient times. Both tools depict differences with one another because of the time differences. These tools have been dated to be from two different time periods one being about 1.4 million and one being from roundabout 800 years ago. At one glance, the structure of the tools can be differentiated as the newer tools are sharper and more carved when compared to the older even though their sizes are relatively the same.

The stone cutting tool made 1.4 million years ago had more rounded top and bottom edges. It had the shape of a jagged piece of rock. Pertaining to the front and back view of the tool, the diameter at the top and bottom around 3 cm while the diameter in the middle was slightly more amounting up to 5cm. However, the side view showed that the tool was wider in the middle being 3 cm wide while being tapered at the top and bottom ends. The front and back surfaces of the tool were uneven and rocky characterize by broken edges and cracks, while viewing sideways it was seen to have a certain layer of thickness, being slightly curved at the top. However, it did not have any definite sharp tip or edge. The front of the stone had more cuts than the being thereby giving it a lumpy appearance. It possessed the characteristics of natural rocks indicating the amateur tool building techniques of that era. When contrasted with the earlier version, the tool from 8,000 years ago is shapelier with a carved tip. It developed into a sharper, more refined tool. The surfaces and edges were lustrous with one end being chiseled at the top, while the bottom being flat resembling a teardrop or a leaf. Pertaining to the front and back view of the tool, the maximum diameter of the tool was the same as the older, except slightly broader towards the bottom. The newer one has limited major considerable gaps and is almost identical to its front side. But the older tool was less than half of its size, with no clear distinction. It had a more comfortable grip on the user’s hand. The features of the tool in the post-era shed light upon the workmanship of the prehistoric humans as they understood what would provide for a better grip of butchering, gathering, and woodcutting. Therefore, it can be concluded that the newly built cutting tool was finer, refined, slimmer than its previous built counterpart. At one glance, it can be said that the tool is similar to modern-day cutting tools such as a kitchen knife.

Band 7.5 Answer

The diagram depicts different kinds of stone tools some of which date back to 1.4 million years and 80- years. With the tools which are older, those tools tend to be more refined having edges which are rougher. The newer ones like the one 800 years old appear smoother and well preserved. In comparison the first two tools include one which is 1.4 million years old and is slightly narrower, displaying a shape which is less well-defined. The more recent ones come further to a sharper point and have clearly rounded sides proving that it was much developed.

The side view of the older tools appears to be bulkier which implies that it has more rough edges. It indicates that the refinement of the tools were not as much as in the later years. In comparison to the side view of the tool which is 800 years old, it appears far smoother and lighter in weight. It implies that people developed the idea of having lighter tools for faster work. The back view of the first tool which is 1.4 million years old appears to be half the size of the newer tool and has far more cracks at the back. The newer tool which can be said to be double the size of the older one has lesser cracks and appears more defined. In contrast with the earlier version, the tool from 8,000 years ago is with a carved tip. It developed into a sharper, more refined tool. The bottom tapered into a 1 cm rounded surface while the top tapered into a 1 cm point. The side view makes it clear that the tool was much peripheral in width when weighed up with the older tool. But the older tool was less than half of its size, with no clear distinction. The features of the tool in the post-era shed light upon the workmanship of the prehistoric humans as they understood what would provide for a better grip of butchering, gathering, and woodcutting.

Band 8 Answer

The diagram above includes stone tools some from the prehistoric period some of which are million years older. These tools have distinct features of their own and clearly a sharp distinction can be identified from both tools, one of which is older than the other. Considering a comparison of the tools, the first tool is 1.4 million years old and based on its front view is quite narrow at the top. The edges of the stone tool seem to be quite rough which can be considered the lack of expertise in carving stone tools.

The more recent tool which is 800 years old has a sharper point at the top. It has clearly rounded sides and bottom which are quite smoother in comparison to the older one. The side view of the older tool appears to be heavier and is quite broader which indicates that the tool was not refined enough to make it lighter. However, the side view of the recent tool which is 800 years old appears far smoother and lighter in weight which implies much refined work. The back view of the tool, which is 1.4 million years old, is smaller in size in comparison to the newer tool and has a lot of cracks. Unlike the older tool, the one which is 8000 years old has fewer cracks and the size is bigger than the older tool. It simply indicates the development of tools made 800 years ago were far more refined than the older ones which are 1.4 million years old.
