Topic: The following two pie charts show the results of a survey into the popularity of various leisure activities among European adults in 1985 and 1995. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Band 7 Answer

The two pie charts show the different leisure activities that Europeans engaged in in the years 1985 and 1995.

Watching TV was undoubtedly the most delightful pastime in both years, with a 32% share in 1985 and a gradual decline to 30% in 1995. The most striking difference, though, was the surprisingly higher amount of time spent playing video games. Nobody mentioned that their favourite pastime was playing video games, but in 1995, this pastime reached its second-highest popularity level, rising to 27%. Further down, at 26%, which is up from 21% in 1985, was conversing with a friend. But from a high of 23% to a low of 8%, the proportion of respondents who said they preferred eating out dropped quickly. The same was true for family conversations, which decreased from about 25% of all conversations in 1985 to only 7% of all family conversations in 1995.

Ten years later, the amount of time spent indoors had caught up to that spent outside. 1995 saw much more than half of the chart taken up by just two hobbies, computer gaming and TV watching. However, in comparison to the first figure, this chart also saw a large decline in other types of activity.

Band 7.5 Answer

The two pie charts show the results of a survey of the cultural and recreational pursuits of boys and girls.

Overall, a similar proportion of both sexes enjoyed listening to music, while much more girls enjoyed reading. Regarding the kids' chosen sports, there were also a lot of variations.

Looking at the first graph, we can see that boys are more likely to play computer games (34 percent involvement rate) than participate in other activities. Basketball is the second most popular pastime, being played by approximately a third of young males. Soccer comes in second, with 17% of people exercising, after basketball. Less popular pastimes for guys, picked by 11% and 10% of them respectively, are skateboarding and listening to music. Only 2% of males participate in reading, the least common cultural activity.

Looking more closely at the second chart, we can observe that dance accounts for 27% of all activities chosen by girls. In contrast to the boys' preferences, more than a fifth of all girls choose reading. Despite having a somewhat lower ratio of female youngsters (8% vs. 16%), playing video games is the third most popular activity among girls. Computer games are slightly more popular than netball, which is played at a 15% rate. Similar to the popularity of skateboarding among boys, 11% of girls enrol in gymnastics. With a percentage of 10%, which is the same as those on the first chart, listening to music is the least preferred pastime.

Band 6.5 Answer

Combining the two pie charts reveals the top pastimes for European adults between 1985 and 1995.

Overall, the number of leisure activities among European adults increased from 1985 to 1995. In particular, watching TV was very common during that time.

As can be seen, in 1985, watching TV, conversing with friends, and conversing with family were the three hobbies that European Adults most frequently picked. In 1995, however, in addition to the two aforementioned pursuits, European Adults also preferred playing computer games. Particularly, in 1985 and 1995, 32% and 30% of respondents, respectively, said they preferred watching TV to talking to friends in their free time. These numbers were 3 to 2 and 6 to 5 higher than the corresponding figures for 1985.

As one of the top activities in 1985, conversing with family was notable at 18%; but, in 1995, Europeans preferred playing video games, which took up 27% of their time.

In terms of the lesser values, the proportion of people who love eating out was 18% in 1985, but it had a dramatic decline, with a level of still 8% in 1995. Similar to this, just 6% and 2% of the total time between two years were accounted for by other activities.
