Band 8 IELTS Essay
The world is going through a serious security threat called Climate change. Climate change is a term coined to denote the rising global temperature, the reference year for comparison is pre World War II era. All the countries who are signatories to the United Nations have come together and vowed to reduce their carbon emissions to reduce the global temperature. Since the debate of Environmentalism has been surging in the newspapers and research papers, the gravity of the issue is hardened.
Apart from reducing carbon emissions there are other several measures that could be taken to mitigate the global temperature. These measures include; reduce, recycle, repurpose, rethink, reuse. These are the key points to tackle climate change. As far as plastics are concerned we not only need to reduce its use but also need to recycle it. But as the debate goes on, recycling of plastic consumes the same amount of energy, which is required to produce a virgin plastic.
So, the apt solution for reducing the use of plastic is to ban its circulation and its uses. And to shift on bags and containers made of paper. It is now evident from the recent events that the world is switching to paper and papers are made by processing trees. Thus, it is like replacing bitter poison with a sweeter one. Recently scientists have revealed that they are working on materials which are eco-friendly and have the same competence as plastic to preserve the food. The process of making new material may not be natural but it’s purely eco-friendly. It is confidently stated by scientists that they are degradable and will not cause harm to the soil. Further, recycling will not emit GHG (GreenHouse Gasses), thus moving towards sustainable growth.

It is recently discovered by the scientists that in Antarctica they have found few traces of polystyrene. It means the continent which was safe from human existence also started witnessing plastic traces. To a layman this news may not concern him but to a man of little knowledge of the environment this news is as scary as encountering catastrophe.
The implications of plastic waste in the environment is way too serious than it seems on the surface. Since plastics are not degradable i.e. they do not perish in the soil. Plastics can only be recycled and reused. This point may give a sigh of relief for a moment. But upon thinking rationally it is concluded that recycling consumes the same amount of energy which is required to manufacture a virgin plastic. Thus, if we are recycling tons of plastic it means that we are contributing more to emitting GHGs (GreenHouse Gasses).
The plastics which are dumped into the hydrosphere (River, lakes, Oceans) distort and disbalances marine life. Small plastics are eaten by big fish like sharks and whales which are not digested by them. It makes their health uneasy and some also die by eating plastic. Marine creatures like jellyfish and other small creatures get stuck in the plastics floating on the ocean, resulting in their death. These deaths are not just numbers but imbalance in the environment which certainly is not good news.
To mitigate such challenges it is advised by the scientists that the banning of plastic may be the only long term and sustainable strategy. On the immediate note, global corporations on cleaning of seas may create an impact. However, practically it is very difficult but by thermal mapping we can identify the area where plastics are concentrated. Further, cleaning those targeted areas may be helpful.
Band 7 IELTS Essay
Plastics are not degradable, they remain in the soil till eternity. But unfortunately this is not an astounding fact because plastics not only distorts the soil health but also creates several serious problems. For instance, when plastics are eaten by animals it causes their death. Further, when it uses wrap food items to preserve food it definitely preserves food items for a later use. However, it also contaminates food, upon eating by us it may cause serious health issues including cancer.
Plastics are manufactured after processing many harmful chemicals eg, polystyrene and polythene which are unfit not only for human consumption. But also when mixed in soil it damages the soil health. A rotten health of soil does not produce the desired amount of crops, the potential of soil to produce crops reduces drastically. And also when the grown crops are consumed by humans they contain poisonous chemicals harming the human health. And the fodder eaten by animals, reduced their milking capacity. If seen in long term this causes income of farmers thinner, at worse leads to increase farmer suicidal deaths. These are only one aspect of looking at plastic from a social perspective. Unfortunately, almost all the packed food items are wrapped in plastic bags, impacting the health negatively.
Plastic has done no good to human beings, preserving food materials has affected the human’s habit of eating fresh food. Further, inculcated the behavior of eating ready-made food items, which are not advisable by the doctors.
Recycling of plastic is often stated by amateur environmentalists to mitigate the plastic use. However, they often tend to ignore the energy required to recycle plastics and the gasses which emerge are Greenhouse gasses (GHGs). This contributes to rising global temperature. Nowadays, there are n numbers of problems originating from the climate change like phenomenon. Flash floods, irregular monsoon patterns, rising sea level, unbearable heat, forest fire, tsunami, and soil health. Further, skin cancer, respiratory diseases, blood pressure and diabetes in children are often associated with climate change related phenomena.
Instead of recycling plastics, an absolute plastic ban is recommended for sustainable growth.
