The graph compares the proportion of people using public transport to those who only use their own car in five Australian cities from 2000 to 2010. Overall, public transport use increased in all cities, but the increased reliance on private cars has only slightly reversed.

In 2000, public transport use was highest in Sydney at 35% and next highest in Melbourne at 25%, while Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide all had rates below 20%.

By 2010, public transport use had increased in all cities. In Sydney, usage reached almost 40%, in Melbourne at 30%, and in Brisbane and Perth at about 25%. In Adelaide, the increase was even smaller, just under 20%. However, there have been only small changes in private car use.

In 2000, car use in Sydney and Melbourne was between 55-60%, falling slightly to around 50% by 2010. In Brisbane and Perth, private car use has remained stable at around 65%. Adelaide has the highest private car use rate at 70% and experienced only minimal decline until 2010.
