The unemployment rate in Australia in 2012 is displayed in the line graph. Overall, it is clear that in the first quarter of the year, the unemployment rate in rural areas was significantly greater than that in metropolitan areas. At the beginning of the year, just around 2% of urban residents were unemployed, compared to about 6.5% of rural residents. There might be many reasons for the unemployment in rural areas. The most important reason is the lack of literacy rate. People residing in rural areas get deprived of their education.

Education is important to be employed. Also there is a lack of job opportunities in rural areas. People have to migrate to urban areas in search of a job which is the main reason for rural areas considered to be not developed. There are no factories and industries in rural areas. As the labor sector offers the most job opportunities. While all the factories and industries are setted up in urban areas.

However, in the second quarter of the year, the percentage of unemployed persons in urban regions rose to around 4% of the urban population. While it steadily decreased to about 4.5% in rural areas. In the third quarter, there were fewer unemployed persons in urban areas—only 2% of the overall population. Rural areas saw a growth in employment during this time, reaching roughly 5.5%. By year's end, the unemployment rate in both urban and rural areas was about the same, at 5%. Development does take place in rural areas but the rate of development is low. Government tends to pay more attention to the development of urban areas.
