People Think Cars are Better Mode of Transportation Than Cycles IELTS Writing Task 2 consists of three sample answers provided below. Topic: Some people think cars are a better way of transportation around the city, while others prefer cycling. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

To begin with, they are way greener as compared to a car, i.e., they are environment friendly. As we know that cars need fuel to run, but cycles, they just need the manpower. With the constant depletion of non-renewable resources like coal, petrol, fuel, oil, etc., bicycles seem to be a good and healthy option to save the planet and the resources for future generations. Cars leave carbon footprints wherever they go, along with carbon dioxide emissions, hence are one of the major factors promoting global warming. Bicycles do not emit any gases on use and moreover, one does not even have to worry about the hiking prices of gas or fuel. With the increasing prices of fuel every year, the high prices take a toll on the pockets of the user, but cycles on the other hand are a one-time investment and are cheap, hence one would be able to save all the money which would have been spent otherwise on fuel.

Using a bicycle is very good for the health of the user too, one gets a lot of exercise on riding a bicycle. But there is no exercise in a car, all one does, is sitting idle. Riding a bicycle burns a lot of calories, is a good activity for the legs and knee joints, accompanied by fat loss and an increase in stamina with regular use. Moreover, with cycles, parking is rarely an issue. Cycles are slender, compact, and occupy very little space, whereas, cars are huge, and would need a lot of space to stand. A study reports that ten cycles can be parked spaciously in an average parking space, hence using a cycle would save one’s time looking and wandering for a parking space. Moreover, all you need to drive a cycle is a helmet and maybe some elbow and knee pads, but with a car, one has to pay for every additive feature, the road tax, fuel charges, etc., hence they are cheaper as compared to cars.

Hence, cycles are economical, environment friendly, and a good exercise for the health of the user.

The contradicting thought and debate of which is a better mode of transportation, cars or cycles have been going on for years. Though cycles are economical, green, and environment friendly, and are a better option for a healthy lifestyle, let us be practical. Practically automobiles are way more dependable and convenient as compared to cycles. Regardless of the distance, and weather, a car can take you places where a cycle cannot.

To begin with, cars are way faster as compared to bicycles, can one travel a distance of 50 miles in one hour using a bicycle? No, it is not possible to ride a bicycle that fasts. Hence, in order to reach on time at the place of your choice, one has to leave way early, hence it is a waste of time. Riding a bicycle to a place of choice would also be regulated by the weather of the area, it is hard to ride a bicycle in heavy rains, in strong winds, and on scorching hot days, or in a snow-covered area, but cars would protect the riders and would be suitable and comfortable for all the weathers.

Looking at the safety factors of cars and bicycles, cars are way safer as compared to bicycles. Riding a bicycle in a metropolitan area, like Gurgaon, Delhi, Kolkata, or Mumbai, is like playing with your life. The huge buses and cars may hit the cycle, followed by injuring the rider, whereas, in a car accident, most of the damage would be faced by the vehicle, thus protecting the driver and the passengers. Studies show that in terms of accident rates bicycles are 24 to 48 times more prone to accidents as compared to cars per kilometer. Around 64% of the two-wheelers and bike riders meet with a deadly accident on the roads yearly. Another advantage of using cars is the number of passengers they can accommodate, a car on average can accommodate 4 to 6 passengers depending on the size of the vehicle, but a cycle can only accommodate 2 people up to the maximum limit. Thus, it is impractical for an entire family to travel from one place to another using just a bicycle.

Though cycles are very productive and green, cars are a dependable, practical, faster, and safer option.

Over decades, people have had different opinions on the topic, cycles or cars, which is a better mode of transportation through a city. Some prefer cars over cycles and others prefer cycles over cars. In my opinion, both are equally good and have their own advantages, the choice of transportation depends on the requirement and the situation under consideration.

With respect to movability, people prefer cars to move from one place to another, they are faster, dependable, and safe to use. Cars not only save time for the user but can travel long distances in a shorter span of time. Studies show that 70% of people prefer cars to travel their everyday route from home to the workplace or even to travel long distances. Moreover, cars nowadays are accommodated with air conditioners, hence protecting the passengers from the scorching heat of the summer. Cars have bigger capacities as compared to cycles, they can accommodate a greater number of people and can also be used to transport goods from one place to another, which is often not possible with cycles.

On the other hand, many people promote using cycles for mobility in their day-to-day lives over cars. Cycles are cheaper, and environmentally friendly since they do not emit harmful gases, do not need any type of fuel, and leave no carbon footprint. They are cheaper and more economical as compared to cars, which are expensive and are characterized by yearly road taxes. Using a cycle regularly ensures a healthy lifestyle for the rider and increases their productivity and stamina. In today’s busy world, where people do not have time to exercise and stay fit, riding cycles for short distances seem a good way to work out and stay toned, healthy, and fit. Although riding a bike is a laborious task, on regular use, the stamina of the riders is increased, and the task seems easier and more fun. Moreover, manufacturing a cycle needs lesser resources as compared to manufacturing cars.

Thus, cycling is the best mode of transportation for short distances which ensures good health for the users, increased productivity, better mental and physical health, and the environment, whereas, cars are a better mode of transportation for long distances, are safer, dependable, and more comfortable as compared to cycles.
