Topic- People in developed countries have the tendency to buy more and more things whether they need it or not. Is it a positive or negative development?

Band 8 Sample Essay

Developed countries and cities have a different lifestyle than village people. The environment and the atmosphere are totally different. People living in developed countries have a better lifestyle. to maintain this lifestyle, they end up buying more things. Also staying in a developed country [provides more temptations. They have all the latest goods available, most people are inclined to buy more and more things as there are unlimited options. In this essay, we will discuss if this is a positive or negative development.

Usually, people in developed countries earn more money than those in underdeveloped countries. This better quality of life allows them higher purchasing power. Everyone is in a competitive environment which increases the demand for goods. They end up buying more than required. Also, the greater the purchasing power, the more likely that the economy will thrive. I believe that this is a positive development. More purchasing capability means more economy for the individual and more taxes for the country. This means the country’s economy is also developing. The people staying in underdeveloped countries cannot buy things because of their lower income. This leads to a lower lifestyle and a lower economy for the country. Development is a whole cycle of better employment opportunities, leading to better income. In turn, leading to better purchasing power. So the tendency to buy more and more things is an indication of better purchasing power and a flourishing economy with good employment opportunities. This leads to positive development.
For example, there are various cooking devices for particular dishes. For now, we have a rice cooker to specifically cook rice, a toaster to toast pieces of bread, an oven to bake, a microwave for heating, and several other devices.

These instruments make life easier. Though some of these things can be done by hand, people prefer to but gadgets. This decreases their work and increases efficiency. They can invest the time earning money. Hence, I believe that buying more things is a positive development as it is increasing the country’s economy also.

In developed countries, we see a trend of people buying more and more things. Sometimes even items that are not necessary. With technological advancements, developed countries have all the latest equipment which they just need to install and live comfortably. But this constant need to buy things that are not needed leads to hoarding. In developed countries, people tend to have a higher purchasing power, especially the wealthy class. They spend enormous amounts of wealth on things that serve them no purpose but only for status.
Though on the surface this seems like development as people have more disposable income. If one takes a deeper look at it. They will understand that this tendency is actually leading to negative development. With people buying more and more things regularly, they are simultaneously dumping and getting rid of old items which are still usable. This way, waste keeps increasing. And since many items are made from non-biodegradable material. It leads to pollution of all forms. As waste gets burnt, it leads to the emission of harmful and toxic gases in the atmosphere, which leads to air pollution. Plastic waste causes water pollution and also harms animals as they don’t realize what is choking them.
With people buying things in an uncontrolled manner, waste too becomes unmanageable which is very detrimental to the environment. With the increase in demand to buy more things, the pressure on nature increases as well. We start exploiting nature as there are many natural resources that are used to produce things. In this way we will soon run out of natural resources and make it difficult for the next generation to live.
So we can clearly see that this tendency is causing more damage which is leading to negative development. Also when people constantly buy new things, nothing really satisfies them and neither do they enjoy any item properly. When one is never satisfied with the things they buy, it leads to them feeling empty and this can severely affect their mental health as well. In a nutshell, we don’t really see any positives about this tendency. Hence it is better if people buy things in a controlled manner. Enjoy and cherish the things they buy and also dispose of them carefully to minimize environmental damage.

Today more than ever, we see people constantly buying unnecessary things. The unsurpassed desire to constantly want everything automatically without even taking a few steps to actually do it. Has led to an increase in demand for more and more things. What people don’t realize is that this tendency induces lethargy in them. And also when one gets everyone instantly. They can just sit around and do nothing, which negatively affects their health.
This tendency is usually seen among people belonging to the richer section of society. Since we do not live in an Egalitarian society, the inequality in income is quite high. Therefore, this leads to unhealthy competition in society and increases the gap between the rich and the poor. The rich keep hoarding and buying more things whereas the poor can hardly get their basic necessities met.
But we cannot overlook the fact that people with high purchasing power are contributing to the country’s GDP. This is done so in a manner, which is a quantifiable measure for development. But this measure cannot truly indicate whether there is an equal distribution of wealth. And also if there's overall welfare in the society. So, even if the GDP is high, we cannot conclude that this tendency leads to positive development.
Buying more and more things also affects the environment negatively as the amount of plastic waste also increases. Which leads to soil and water pollution. If this tendency is causing harm to the environment, then it cannot indicate positive development. Purchasing too many things from this aspect can be seen as an irresponsible and reckless act.
This tendency is doing more harm, therefore this cannot lead to positive development. Development is not only about increasing the general purchasing power of the people so that they can purchase more things. But also to care for the environment, to act responsibly and to also live in harmony. Therefore, we can conclude that this is a negative development and people should be made aware of this. So that they can start buying responsibly and also manage their waste properly.
