Online Shopping Sales for Retail Sectors in Canada  IELTS Writing Task 1 is an academic task. The IELTS academic writing task 1 deals with info-graphic questions. The given cartograms represent the percentage of online sales made by the different sectors – namely, the Electronics & Appliances sector; the Food & Beverage sector; the Home Furnishings sector and the Video Games sector – in Canada in the years 2005 and 2010, respectively.

In 2005, about 35 percent of online sales was made in the Electronic & Appliances sector of Canada. This sector, however, saw a significant decrease in sales – around 5 percent – in 2010. Thus, only 30 percent of online sales was made in the Electronic & Appliances sector of the country in 2010.

Again, in 2005, nearly 22 percent of online sales was made in the food and beverage sector of Canada. However, this sector saw a significant increase in sales by almost 10 percent in 2010. About 32 percent of internet sales was made in the food and beverage sector during this year.

In contrast, the home furnishings sector saw a drastic decline in the percentage of online sales in 2010. In 2005, almost 25 percent of online sales were made by the home furnishings sector. However, by 2010, this figure reduced significantly by about 10 percent. Thus, the home furnishings sector of Canada accounted for only 15 percent of the total internet sales in 2010.

In a similar way, the video games sector witnessed a rise in online sales by almost 5 percent. In 2005, the video games sector contributed to only 18 percent of the total sales made online. However, this figure increased significantly to almost 23 percent in 2010.

In conclusion it can be said that the home furnishings and the electronic and appliances sectors witnessed a reduction in internet sales. On the other hand, the video games and the food and beverage sectors saw an increase in online sales.

The above pie diagrams illustrate the percentage of online sales made by diverse retail sectors in Canada in 2005 and 2010, respectively. It includes the Electronics & Appliances sector; the Food & Beverage sector; the Home Furnishings sector and the Video Games sector. Each sector has been coloured differently in order to distinguish them from one another.

Both the video games and the food and beverage sectors witnessed an increase in the percentage of their internet sales in 2010. In 2005, nearly 22 percent of the online sales was made by the food and beverage sector of Canada. This percentage, however, increased swiftly in 2010 with almost 32 percent of online sales being made in this sector during the same year. Similarly, the video games sector also witnessed online sales of nearly 18 percent in 2005 which increased to around 23 percent by 2010.

On the other hand, the other sectors – home furnishings and electronics and appliances – saw a decrease in their sales in 2010. In 2005, the home furnishings sector contributed to nearly 25 percent of the online sales made in Canada. However, this percentage decreased by almost 10 percent in 2010. The sector was able to make only 15 percent online sales during that year. Likewise, the electronics and appliances sector made for nearly 35 percent of the total online sales in 2005. Thus, it can be concluded that both the Electronics & Appliances and the Home Furnishings sectors saw a drastic decline in the percentage of sales made online. On the other hand, the other sectors, namely the food and beverage sector and the video games sector witnessed a significant increase in the percentage of internet sales.
