Topic: Nowadays, fewer people tend to look after their old relatives and send them to some old age homes. What is the situation in your country? In your opinion, who should be responsible to look after the elderly?

Band 6 IELTS Essay

The idea that fewer people are taking care of their old relatives and families and are instead sending them to old age homes is quite true. While in my opinion, taking the responsibility of the older family members is the responsibility of the children, I believe even the government can play its role.

Taking into consideration the situation of my country, India, it may be identified that this is a trend that has taken place in this country as much as in any other part of the world. People nowadays tend to have a busier life and schedule where they are involved in a hectic work life. Even for the leisure life of the younger generations they are more inclined towards having their own independence rather than taking care of them. Moreover, in the case of India, wages can be considered a huge problem due to which it becomes difficult for many to run their families. On the other hand, their workplace culture has also become a certain way that they need to focus more on that aspect. These elderly people often find themselves alone and separated from their children. Many times when children have to shift to another country, it becomes difficult for them to take care of their older parents or relatives. In such cases, they prefer sending them to old age homes to ensure their proper care and health. The foremost responsibility in my opinion is of the children to take care of their family. It is this family who worked hard for the benefits of their children. In such a situation, it can only be the children who need to understand their responsibilities towards their parents when they need them the most. They deserve the love, care and respect of their children as much as they were given when they were children. On the other hand, government initiatives should focus on providing funds to the people who are not looked after by their children, ensuring to live their life happily.

Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

The demographic trends of the world shows that old age homes in the world are increasing and people are trying to send their older relatives and family members to these places. Younger people are considering sending the elderly to old age homes for their care purpose while they live separately.

In my country India, while it may be identified that old age homes still remain a concept which is developing. However, even in India people have started living separately from their parents. Either due to issues of work where they have to shift to another city or country or due to their personal reasons, children stay separately from their family. However, taking care of their parents at their old age is important for the children. Indian values are majorly focused on families living together. However, with changing times even the older people have started to understand the needs of the generation. Accordingly, nowadays, very few older people and their families tend to live with their children. They provide them after a certain age with the independence that they need and ensure that they take their own decisions. This has further brought the children and the parents closer as part of their relationships. From time to time, children do visit their parents and other older relatives ensuring their health and safety. However, considering that old age homes are still developing in the country, it may be identified that they tend to provide a sense of socialisation for those elderly who face social isolation. The elderly people need and want someone to talk to or to gossip with, they need constant care and support. Old age homes have the ability to provide this to the elderly people while they do not have their children around them. Elderly people on the other hand who are neglected by their own family also find a different kind of family in these elderly care. In my opinion, while children are responsible for their parents' well-being, practicality should be considered. The older people would find better care and environment with the same age group hence, sending them to old age homes is not a negative trend.

Band 9 IELTS Essay

In this generation nuclear families have become more common than bigger and joint families. This has led fewer people to take care of their elderly family members.

Instead they are sent away to old age homes to take care of them. However, I feel that being in a country like India, it is essential that elderly people are taken care of. In my opinion if the families have the financial means that can support and care for the elder, then they should not consider old age homes. Apparently, it becomes essential to focus on the fact that Indian families have always lived together with their parents and children. With the new generation becoming more self-centred and highly career oriented which is a positive development, they ignore their families. On the other hand, with being a progressive nation, many families even find themselves in a position where children and parents live separately. This is to ensure that the generation gap does not create too much chaos in any of the families and it is more nurtured. It becomes essential in a way that both the elderly people and the children live in peace. Especially the elderly people need to live in peace in their old age and away from any kind of chaos. Certainly, if the children are capable financially to take care of their families then in my opinion they should not send them to old age homes. They can take care of their families even without staying 24/7 with them. They can have their own separate spaces but eventually, have a sense of responsibility to take care of their elderly in the family for as long as they shall live.
