Topic: Most societies have homeless people. Some people think that the best way to help them is to give them money. To what extent do you agree?

Band 7.5 IELTS Essay

In today's world, most societies have various sections of people. Among them many are homeless. Some say that providing money to homeless people is the best way to help them while some disagree. In the following paragraphs, I have explored the merits as well as the demerits of this argument.

A proverb goes that “Money can’t buy happiness”. However, I believe that money can solve all the problems of homeless people. they are homeless because they do not have money or any source of income to stay in a home. Money will definitely help them find a new shelter and a new life. However, I also believe that carelessly given monetary aid will only serve their addictions. They might not get motivation of leading a good life with money. So, giving money will depend on the wealthier this will only contribute to increasing income gaps or will go in vain. The best kind of help given to someone is upliftment which can be done by making them self-reliant. That’s why it’s necessary to impart education and necessary work skills to such people and supply them with actual goods instead of money. Giving money will ensure that they can give their children’s school fees. It can also help them to create a makeshift home. With the money given by those who have, homeless people might be able to group together and form an organization. This organization will help them with basic supplies like electricity, water, etc. They can even pool this money to provide credits to such homeless people who want to set up a street shop or something that requires initial capital. In conclusion, money is more likely to solve all the problems of homeless people, but it might not be the best way to do so because we can’t presume all good consequences.

I believe that it is important to extend monetary help to homeless people. At the same time, it should be checked whether the money is utilized in a proper manner. Considering this one can donate their money to NGOs instead of handing it out to the homeless in small pocket changes that won’t help them beyond a meal.

Band 7 IELTS Essay

Most Societies have a section of marginalized people without a home, they either live in makeshift houses or sleep on open streets exposed to all kinds of dangers. It advocates that monetary aid to such people is the best kind of help that can be extended to them.

I agree with the idea and in the following paragraphs, I have explored the idea of how money can make their lives better. People are homeless simply because they don’t have much money, if their finances were decent, they would have been able to rent some premises. That’s why it's important to give homeless people money so that they can go about their daily lives, buy food, clothing, and other necessities. If they have the money, they can also decide for harsher seasons like monsoon and winter and save their lives. Here, money giving isn’t being advocated as a tool to make them charity-dependent but donate money to homeless people to make them empowered. This empowerment is much similar to how NGOs do it – they run on donations from people like us and in turn they are able to build a makeshift house for homeless people, educate their children and provide them access to basic facilities like Clean Drinking water and proper sanitation, these NGOs also conduct workshops to train homeless people which helps them find employment ultimately making their life better for times to come. These skilling workshops also help migrant workers who are homeless solely for the reason that they have come to a place with no connections and are unable to find work which forces them to live as homeless. Now, if this money is given to homeless people, then with the right kind of direction, they may form a self-help group of sorts to uplift their community on lines of NGOs modus operandi.

In conclusion, all the beneficial schemes and resource arrangements can only be managed by money which is why giving money to homeless people is the best kind of help they can receive from us.

Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

Most Societies have a community of people without homes, there can be many reasons for this homelessness irrespective of that one argument that is often put forward is that one should give them money as it’s the best way to help such people.

I am opposed to the idea because of the reasons that I have explored in the following paragraphs. The argument that giving money to homeless people is the best way to help them is wrong because it presumes two things that could be false, the first one is that homelessness is always about money and the second is that common people have an endless capacity to give. More often than not people are homeless because they are battling addiction or they are petty criminals with dire finances, giving them money doesn’t solve their problems because they could easily squander the money on bad things like alcohol and drugs. It's also not fair to expect that people must always give the money because there are several instances where people of means act like beggars just because it's easy money, this discourages people who are genuinely trying to help the homeless.

It's important to realize that money would solve the problem of one meal for a homeless person, but they still won’t have a home and will have to keep searching for generous donors every time they wish to eat. This money will not protect them from cold weather like an actual house will. Rehabilitation of homeless people is more important than small amounts of money extended to them, this rehabilitation can include skilling such people, finding suitable employment or education opportunities for them so that they can have a stable income and find a place to rent and food to eat even if they can’t afford a house. Those homeless people who are battling addiction or involvement in petty crimes should be rehabilitated by institutional aid like de-addiction camps and de-stigmatization of such criminals. In conclusion, small amounts of money given by people when they are feeling generous will only homeless people dependent upon a fickle source of survival. An opportunity to work and educate themselves will surely help in the longer run as it will make them self-sufficient.
