Topic: Memorization of Information by Frequent Repetition IELTS Writing Task 2

Model Answer 1

In many education systems rote learning or what is known as memorization of information based on repetition is a common practice that students are engaged with. The system of education has become more about scoring higher marks and achieving higher grades rather than actually understanding what is being taught. I certainly believe that memorization of information might result in being in the good books of the teachers and score high marks, but most definitely leads to students being tired of reading and repeating the same information. Rote learning is a method that many schools and educational institutions have adopted for motivating students to acquire good grades and some believe it has more advantages than disadvantages which I certainly disagree with. In the field of education, memorization of information and studies works only to a certain extent but rather puts a lot of pressure on the students to learn the information thoroughly. The possibility of memorization is that students would lose interest easily and would be bored which would ultimately bring down their grades in school. One of the main reasons for losing interest in the subject is because students have understood the pattern of memorization and find least interest in reciting the same lines of information everyday. Another disadvantage of memorization of information based on frequent repetition is that students lose the enthusiasm as well as confidence to discuss and ask questions whenever they have a doubt. This might lead them to a stage where they would need to prepare for different kinds of entrance examinations and would not be able to perform well because of the unpredictable questions that they might not be able to remember. With a large amount of information gathered within the brain through rote learning method students tend to lose the enthusiasm to even find interest in different subject areas which they might consider for higher studies. Although the advantage of rote learning is only for acquiring higher grades which is possible through memorization. However, if students lack confidence to answer questions and recite the information, the ultimate result would be dropping of their grades hence, proving that memorization has disadvantages in the education system which far outweighs any advantage.

Model Answer 2

Memorization of information based on a repeated format in the education system has become a method of learning, commonly known as rote learning which is focused on how better students can acquire higher grades and marks. Education system has most definitely changed into a format where memorization or Rote Learning is being considered an effective method of study. The primary reason for this kind of learning method is to score higher grades in the examinations in schools which however, I consider not advantageous. Rather I consider that disadvantages of the Rote Learning method is higher considering that it makes learning slower and boring for students. When students engage in memorizing the same information with frequent repetitions and do not engage with the area of study, in order to understand what is being taught to them, they tend to lose interest easily. However, the primary advantage that has been considered necessary for students is in terms of achieving higher grades which is considered important by the education system and even by the parents of the students. Parents and teachers alike consider that students scoring higher marks are smarter and for this purpose, the Rote Learning method is best suitable. Effectively, students might find it interesting in scoring higher marks but the biggest disadvantage is that knowledge is being compromised through the Rote Learning method. Accordingly, students also need to meet the expectations of scoring higher grades. Apparently, it has become a common practice for students to recite their academic information from their textbooks and are considered to be scoring higher grades without much effort. However, students need to find deliberate interest and confidence to study their textbooks which happens only when they are able to understand and grasp knowledge about different topics rather than simply memorizing them. It may be considered that Rote Learning as a method of education is mainly preferred by the education system for enhancing the grades of the students. However, another biggest disadvantage of the method of memorization of information is that students when pursuing higher education in colleges or universities, where they might need to appear for entrance tests, might not be able to perform well.

Model Answer 3

Education system is changing drastically and one of the influences on the system of education is that of Rote Learning or studying with memorization of the information. The academic structure where students have to memorize their textbooks to score answers rather than thoroughly understanding the topic may be considered extremely restraining students from becoming efficient. While some people believe that the advantages of this system of education is more as children are able to achieve higher grades in school, the disadvantages of this system also needs to be understood. One of the biggest disadvantages of memorizing information from academic texts is that the inclusion of frequent repetitions within their method of learning results in lower productivity. The knowledge gained from the textbooks lack proper understanding by the students as a result of memorization of the information rather than being able to identify their practical implication. Considerably, it becomes difficult for the students to pursue higher studies as the knowledge gained from school was in vain and academic skills become null and void. Furthermore, students are deprived of their creative thinking abilities when the education requires them to memorize the information rather than ask questions or explore different ideas in an area of study. The process of generation of ideas and thoughts are lost in the process of memorization involving frequent repetition because their knowledge remains confined to books that they study in school. The sole purpose of Rote Learning is for achieving higher results which is possible for the students and score higher marks. In certain cases the advantage of Rote Learning remains considering that while studying mathematical equations and or theoretical concepts, it becomes important to memorize what has been provided in textbooks as these are established notions. Rote learning helps students in this aspect but in a wider context, memorization of information simply restricts the potential of the students in exploring their knowledge base and ideas hence, proving that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
