Section 1

Memo to all staff

Staff are prohibited from driving and using their phones

As we, your employer, can be liable for any accidents that occur while an employee is using the phone and driving during working hours, it is now company policy that this practice be prohibited. This includes bluetooth and hands-free modes. When working, driving is already one of the most dangerous activities you can do. If you add phone use to that, the risks are amplified. You are four times more likely to have an accident if you are using your phone. We want to keep our employees safe. That is why we strongly suggest that phones be completely turned off while you are driving company cars so you are not distracted by ring tones and incoming messages. The ban also includes looking at text messages and online maps and any other activity the phone is used for. Even if you use hands-free mode, it is still very dangerous. More dangerous than talking to someone who is in the car.

We understand that many of our employees use their car as an on-the-road office. Often when visiting customers, the car is the best place for preparing documents and it offers privacy for phone calls. Once a car is parked and switched off and your hands are no longer on the wheel, it is permissible to use your mobile phone.

Police are able to check if phones were in use at the time of an accident. As driving while using a phone is a driving violation according to law, you and the company would have to pay any damages if an accident occurred, as the insurance would no longer cover the costs Because of this, use of the phone while you are driving a company car will be grounds for suspension or even dismissal. HR will be in touch with all employees who have a company car to have them sign the changes to their work agreements with the company, and the company handbook is being updated.
