Topic: Mathematics - IELTS Speaking Part 1

Q 1. Do you like Maths?

Answer: Yes, I don’t want to blow my own trumpet but I got very good grades in Mathematics from my school days. I even pursued Mathematics in my higher secondary and secured really good marks. I wanted to pursue Mathematics further and therefore I planned to take it up as a career. During primary school, I was really good at simple arithmetics i.e. addition, subtraction, and division. I really enjoyed solving various questions. When I was in my higher secondary, I was really fascinated with integration and derivatives and I used to solve different reference books. This is the reason why I am currently pursuing statistics at university and aim to be a statistician in the future. I think I have inherited my father’s mathematical and analytical skills since he’s equally good at Mathematics. My father is also really good at Mathematics and I think I should thank him for this. Since my childhood, he used to teach me Mathematics and I think he was the reason I became very fond of the subject. Moreover, the feeling of looking at equations and feeling scared thinking it’s impossible to solve, but then with hard work when you solve the problem and understand how it works, it is the best feeling in the world since it gives you satisfaction.

Vocabulary:

  • Blow my own target- to brag or boast
  • Statistician- an expert in doing analysis of statistics
  • Pursuing- Following
  • Arithmetic- a branch of mathematics dealing with the properties and manipulation of numbers
  • Inherit- things derived from one’s parents or ancestors
  • Grateful- blessed

Q 2. When did you start learning Mathematics?

Answer: If my memory serves me well, I started learning math at the age of four when my parents enrolled me in kindergarten. I learned basic arithmetic, but only addition and subtraction, multiplication and division like counting how many apples or candies and subtracting the apples if I ate one or two, something like that. That was a piece of cake. I learned counting from one to a hundred in that class but learned the basic math such as addition and subtraction in the first standard. I remember my childhood days when I started learning basic arithmetics. My parents used to teach me the basics using matchsticks. As I got promoted to higher classes, it became more and more complex. From addition to subtraction, it went to algebra, geometry, integration, etc and since my foundation was clear, I did not face many problems. Therefore, it is very important to have the basics clear.

Vocabulary:

  • If my memory serves me well- used for saying that you think that you have remembered something correctly
  • Basic Arithmetic- the basic calculations such as addition, subtraction, etc.
  • A piece of cake- very easy

Q 3. Do you use a calculator?

Answer: Yes I do! I often use my phone’s calculator when I go shopping at the grocery store. I always make sure to keep track of my expenses as I don't want to go beyond my budget. My phone’s calculator is a big help for me to not overspend. The phone’s calculator is such a blessing since it makes calculations so easy and fast. With just one click you can calculate and get the result in seconds. I do use a calculator and also prefer using it when there are difficult calculations to be made and it will consume a lot of time there. But, for simpler arithmetic problems, a calculator is something I don’t require. Definitely, however, I feel that it is great to have a calculator by your side to help you solve difficult calculations. The calculator not only saves time but gives accurate results no matter how complex the problem is. Therefore, even though I am good at Mathematics I still use a calculator sometimes to save time.

Vocabulary:

  • Keep track- to make sure that you know what is happening
  • Beyond budget- another way to say is out of budget/ over the budget
  • Overspend- spend more than the expected amount
  • Difficult- require much effort or skill to accomplish, deal with or understand
  • Consume- take up
  • Accurate- correct in all details/ exact
  • Complex- consisting of many difficult or connected parts
