Topic: Many university students live with their families. While others live away from home because their universities are in different places. What are the advantages and disadvantages of both situations?

Band 8 IELTS Essay

Once students have graduated from high school. They are required to figure out whether they want to continue studying at a university in their hometown and stay at home. Or move to other cities to avail themselves of better opportunities. While many students prefer to move to the university campus to get the full college experience. Others decide to stay back at their homes and attend college. While there are advantages and disadvantages to both situations, the advantages of living at home during university simply can not be ignored.

The first and the most obvious advantage is that staying at your home is a lot more affordable. Then moving to the college campus since you do not have to pay for the housing and meal plans. By staying at your home you can save that money and use it later to get your own house. Not only that but staying at home is also much healthier. The food that is cooked at your home is much more healthy than the food that is cooked on campus. And you are less likely to go out and eat cheap junk food regularly with your friends. Living at your home will help you stick to a stable routine and provide you with a stable and peaceful environment under the strict guidance of your parents.

An advantage that you simply can not overlook is the major support system that is your family. Living with your family while attending university means that there will always be someone for you. Someone will be checking up on your well-being, and take care of you whenever you feel sick or stressed. This will help you maintain a strong relationship with your family members as you will see them regularly. Homesickness is very common to be found in students who have recently moved out of the home to stay on the college campus. This way one can simply avoid this stressful experience. Similarly, in this option, you will have fewer distractions. For instance, your sleep will not be hampered by your roommate entering the room at midnight, after a night of partying.

While there are lots of advantages to staying at home while attending your university, there are always two sides to a coin. Depending upon where your home is located, you might be required to make a long commute to your campus every day. It might end up costing quite a bit of time as well as money. Not to forget the traffic jams, bad weather, or road accidents, you might even have to end up taking a long and difficult commute. If you are travelling by your car, searching for a suitable parking spot will only lead to more delay and unwarranted stress.

Another downside of staying at home might be lesser accessibility to campus events. You can indeed have a lot of fun with your family. But you will not be able to participate in hosting or attending college events the same way as your on-campus peers can. It gets a lot more difficult to make the daily commute for the preparations. And you will have to leave early from the events just to reach your home on time.

Not only does staying back at home limit you from attending the on-campus events, but it also holds you off from properly connecting with your peers. Since your peers stay together, their plans are bound to be a lot more spontaneous. And as it might not always be possible for you to stay after classroom hours, you might end up feeling left out from them. Staying with your family means that you are still living under the roof of your parents. And even though you are no longer a child, your parents may face difficulties understanding that, and respecting your boundaries. Thus it might take away from you the feeling of being an independent adult.

To sum up all the disadvantages of staying at home while attending university. We can simply say that it takes away the full college experience from you. It means that you do not get to have the college roommate experience where you have to stay and enjoy yourself with different kinds of people.

Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

While some university students prefer to stay at home while attending their university to enjoy the comforts that come with it. Some students prefer to move out and get the full college experience. While it is true that a student will not have to worry about what to eat for dinner or where to spend their money. Some benefits come with staying at a university during your college. The very first advantage that one has to mention will be the freedom that comes with getting to live your life on your terms.

For the majority of students, this is the first time that they get to have a taste of what it is like to be an independent adult. They finally get the freedom to do things their way, without the guidance of their parents. However, the students also have to be greatly responsible to avoid any trouble. Living away from the roof of their home forces students to be more responsible as there is no one to feed them or clean their clothes. They have to take care of themselves or learn from the consequences.

Moving away from home to attend university will allow the students to get a life experience that will shape them into an adult. Not only do they grow as a person, but they also learn the basic skills that are required to lead life. For example how to fix a leaking tap or how to change a bulb. Another point that we simply can not overlook is the huge number of conveniences that come with living a minute away from the university campus. If you have an early morning lecture, you will not have to worry about getting up at dawn or missing the lecture. Similarly, if you have huge gaps in between your lectures, you do not have to worry about how to spend them, you can simply come back to your room. You will get the opportunity to socialise and get close to your roommates, have a great time with them, and simply enjoy the college experience.
