Band 8 IELTS Essay

Work-life balance has become quite difficult to foster considering the rapidly moving life and the need to keep financial stability. This has led people to engage more in work and take lesser breaks. This aspect has more demerits than merits; the impact of these are quite trivial. The reason behind long working hours and less leisure activities is because of the demands at the workplace. Businesses are trying to move as fast as technologies are developing and they want their customers to remain engaged. As a result, employees have been required to work round-the-clock, without proper time for leisure activities. Effectively, with lack of leisure activities people would resort back to a sedentary lifestyle which would eventually affect their physical health. This would lead to diseases like body ache, obesity, and in some cases even diabetes.

Moreover, long working hours and comparatively very little break would also hamper their mental health conditions showing signs of anxiety and depression. The purpose of having leisure activities is to ensure that people are able to relax in their free time, release their minds and do what pleases them. This could properly help them to ensure that even at work hours they are able to work with complete concentration. However, in most cases people are found to be suffering from depression, anxiety, short-temperedness, etc. Human beings are multi-taskers and can undertake different tasks simultaneously proving their efficiency. However, even we need to take smaller breaks at regular intervals to work with a focused mind. Working in a monotonous routine cannot be easy to handle and requires people to move away and take rest, ensuring that stress is released. Thus, from this it can be understood that leisure activities are a way to ensure a person to enjoy its life to the fullest and not always remain stressed with work. Therefore, working long hours has more disadvantages than advantages.

Band 7 IELTS Essay

People have become extremely busy these days to prove their efficiency and worth. Nowadays people are working for long hours and are taking little time for their leisure activities. It is true that businesses have been moving rapidly and business dynamics require employees to work ten times more productively. However, the efforts need to be based on smart work tactics rather than just hard work. It becomes essential for the people to take out time for themselves and not engage in their workplace beyond their capacity.

Every person needs a break to release their stress and have an open mind. It is good for both mental and physical health. People think their over working and efficiency shown at the workplace with little to no holidays in a year would acquire them higher incentives. While it may be true, their hard work cannot be just measured in numbers. Moreover, these incentives might be earned in vain as eventual physical or mental health issues would drain them out of money. Effectively, with lack of leisure activities people would have a sedentary lifestyle which would affect their physical health. It may lead to laziness, obesity, and diabetes. Moreover, long working hours and comparatively very little break would also hamper their mental health conditions as well. People tend to show signs of depression and anxiety on a large scale. The cause of it is excessive stress which does not let their mind focus on any other activity. It drains them of energy and before they know that the day ends, they start working again. It becomes difficult after long hours of work for people to engage themselves in leisure activities. Moreover, they find resting or sleeping as a much more convenient option after a tiring day at work. This affects their health eventually. Hence, in my opinion, understanding long work hours with very little leisure activities has disadvantages which outweighs advantages.

Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

It is believed that working for long hours has higher benefits. Many people work for extra hours and give very little time for their leisure activities thus, having been faced with immense amounts of difficulties. However, for some people it is also about how to deal with the rising expenses which makes them consider compromising with their leisure and focus on working extra. Evidently, both advantages and disadvantages can be identified to exist within this kind of professional life that does not offer work-life balance.

First and foremost, the main advantage of working for long hours is getting paid extra. In other words, employees who receive less salary concentrate on working overtime so that they are able to receive extra money for their work. Many organisations give their employees an allowance to motivate them to work for late hours. This enables them to earn higher but lose their leisure time as well. Moreover, many people do this to earn higher popularity in the organisation. This helps in increasing their visibility with their extra work. This is another positive impact. However, their hard work cannot be just measured in numbers or gaining visibility. Effectively, with lack of leisure activities people would result in people living a highly monotonous life where they do not have any balance. People do not find pleasure in any leisure activity because they have become used to the longer shifts of work. This has deliberate effects on physical health causing obesity and diabetes and on mental health causing depression and stress. Hence, in my opinion, it is true that advantages of working over time exist, but it should not be at the expense of one’s health conditions. This implies that disadvantages overweigh the advantages.
