Band 8 IELTS Essay

One of the most challenging things an adult will ever face is parenting. When a child grows up, his or her upbringing will have had an effect on his or her mind, personality, and attitude. Some parents could overreact and become too protective during this period. Many people believe that parents today are overprotective, and to some extent, this is true. But in the age of technology, a parent needs to be concerned about what their child watches and listens to and how it affects their child's mind.

We have seen that practically all children now have access to mobile phones and computers as a result of the pandemic. The fact that so much technology is readily available and that it is possible to find anything online could prove to be detrimental. These, such as violent videos, the use of filthy language, and other such things, have a significant impact on a child's psyche. These videos incite a child's rebelliousness and intransigence and lead to innocent children being led astray to commit crimes, commit suicide, etc. Parents are compelled to watch their kids because of these factors. Additionally, there are numerous incidents of bullying, kidnapping, child trafficking, murders, etc. that strike fear in the hearts of both parents and kids.

In light of this, it is okay to protect a youngster too much. On the other hand, overprotection causes a child to become totally dependent on his or her parents, as well as underconfident and unmotivated. Additionally, some overly careful parents forbid their kids from playing outside, even when other youngsters do. Their physical development is negatively impacted by this. As a result, a protected child may lack energy, confidence, and communication skills. Additionally, it aids in improving mental capacity but hinders growth due to physical inactivity.

It is abundantly clear from the foregoing discussions that a child's protection leads to improvement. But only if the parents don't go overboard and become overly protective.

Band 6 IELTS Essay

It is the moral duty of parents and siblings to protect younger ones in harmful and dangerous situations. However, excess of anything is harmful. Overprotectiveness often leaves a negative impact on children as they may feel alienated. Moreover, keeping a kid under 24x7 surveillance creates a sense of fear among children.

Overprotectiveness refers to the process of keeping a watch on children most of the time and protecting them from potentially fearful and harmful situations. For example, fighting, bullying, cursing, scolding from elders, etc.

These situations are bad for any child and protecting them is a noble deed. However, if a child never experiences these situations then he/she will never be able to tackle the situation in the future which will make him/her weak.

Furthermore, an over-protective parent makes all decisions for a child making him over-dependent on his parents. In these cases, children never become independent and cannot make decisions in their own lives.

A rise in the number of overprotective parents has been observed in modern times. It is greater than that of older days. There are several factors leading to this rise, such as:

Firstly, lockdown, due to the rise of COVID-19 and lockdowns all over the world, no one was allowed to go outside. Children were in front of their parents every time. This situation created a habit of too much caring for children, resulting in overprotectiveness.

Secondly, technology, due to the advancement in technology children has opted out of outdoor games and are diverted to indoor games, making them physically weak.

Thirdly, study, kids get a lot of homework from their school, so much that most of it requires parents' help and remains left for doing the other days. This makes their parents anxious about their results and hence they start getting overprotective.

And, last but not the least, the crime rate, in the modern era it has become much more difficult for someone to trust anybody, especially parents. They protect their children from all the ills of society.

Thus, it can be concluded that the hypothesis that modern parents are overprotective holds good. But we can't deny the fact that it is the overprotective nature of modern parents that creates a safe environment for a child.

Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

There exists a fine line between caring and overprotectiveness which is often not taken into consideration by modern parents. The overprotective nature of parents compels them to apply numerous foundations on kids and in order to break free, children often tell lies. Thus, a major disadvantage of overprotectiveness is that it makes a kid hide things from his/her parents and provide incorrect information whenever needed.

Furthermore, an overprotective parent gives rise to an overpampered child, and such children, generally, possess the traits of an introvert. These kids tend to complain about every difficult situation and often make them a laughing stock. Hence, overprotectiveness results in depression, demotivation, and immaturity in kids.

However, it is the behavior and attitude of children that pressurizes parents to become overprotective. For instance, consider a child who does not know the art of making good decisions but still wants to make decisions, and that too in a hurry. Moreover, failure makes him angry. This situation for the child adds up to tensions among his parents and they, in turn, take much more care of him, in order to rectify his mistakes.

Parents may pressurize him to stay at home and tell them what happened at school, tuition, etc. every day. Just to improve his qualities and make him a mature, intellectual, diplomatic, and confident person.

There are several aspects of caring and affection for children but excess of it may be harmful.

Thus, the over-protective nature of parents is another version of their love and care for their offspring. It is to help them grow without any fear and enjoy their childhood. However, they should allow their younger ones to make their own decisions so that they may gain experience and not fear harsh times.
