Letter To the Editor of a Newspaper Enquiring About an Old Friend IELTS General Writing Task 1 is a letter-writing topic. The given situation is to write a letter to the editor of a newspaper to enquire about an old friend, this is a formal letter-writing task. Dear Sir,
I am writing to enquire about Avinash Mishra, the subject of your article on budding entrepreneurs, that was published on Monday, 19th June. The article detailed his startup venture, Splitkaro, an Indian app built for splitting bills. Such creative ideas developed on home soil, competing with apps on the international market, bring immense pride to all of us. It was refreshing to see your newspaper making the general public aware of such promising talents, I am sure it will inspire the youth.
Avinash was my batchmate when I was pursuing my bachelor’s degree. While Avinash was an IT student and I was in the Biotechnology department. We met when we both joined the socio-cultural club of the college for extra-curricular activities and became fast friends. I can confidently say that I was sure Avinash would build his own company someday, based on seeing him work in the Entrepreneurship cell in the college. I left the country soon after we graduated and lost touch with him after a while.
Your article reminded me of the good old days and seemed like the perfect time to get in touch with him. I understand you must have his contact details or know how to get in touch with him, I would be highly obliged if you could share this information with me. If you mention my name to him, he will remember me. It would be wonderful to reconnect with him after 12 years.

Dear Mr. Chaddha,
This is in reference to your Women’s Day special article, published on February 13th. The article outlined women in top positions at multinational corporations, one of the subjects covered in the article was Richa Kashyap. The article spoke about how Richa came from a middle-class background, struggled to get an educational degree and worked up the corporate ladder against all odds. It is important, almost a necessity, to speak about such women in a country where girl child education is lacking. Such powerful women will inspire young girls to push patriarchal boundaries, it will also teach parents to empower their daughters.
I have known Richa since my school days, we studied in the same class for 8 years till her family shifted to another city. We managed to keep in touch for a few years through letters and postcards but after I left the country. I wanted to pursue my bachelor’s degree, but I lost all contact with her. Richa was a popular girl, well-liked by all her peers. She was a natural-born leader with a fiery spirit. It was beautiful to see that her kind heart and powerful position in the corporate world enabled her to make donations to necessary causes.
I have not been successful in finding Richa on social media, I was wondering if you could help me get in touch with her. I am sure she still remembers me as fondly as I still remember her. I would be highly obliged if you could share her contact details or tell me how to contact her.

Dear Ms. Kapoor,
I would like to bring to your attention the article published on 20th July, the article in question was about the candidates that have cracked the UPSC exams. Your article focused on aspirants with difficult backgrounds who made it their aim to become IAS officers. One such story was of Rashmi Rani, an aspirant from Bihar who suffered several setbacks all her life. But managed to secure a high rank and is now set to become the first IAS officer in her village. Stories of aspirants like Rashmi instill a great sense of pride, what better goal than the desire to serve your country.
Rashmi and I were neighbors for 15 years, throughout our school life and bachelor’s degree. Even though we studied in different cities, we met whenever we were back home for vacations. Rashmi wished to improve the struggling conditions of her village, she wanted to reach a position that would allow her to make such impactful decisions. After my family shifted to a different city, I lost touch with Rashmi. Our numbers changed and I have not been able to contact her ever since.
I would like to humbly request you to provide me with her contact details or tell me how to get in touch with her. I believe your reporter might be able to help with my request, I would request you to inform her before sharing her details with me. It would be surreal to reconnect with her after all these years, especially after she has accomplished so much and made us all proud.
