Band 7 Answer

The above diagram is based on the modern landfill for household waste in the form of a design from the construction to closure phase. The diagram illustrates a three-stage process for a landfill waste disposal starting from construction, use to closure. The process of landfilling for disposing of formerly produced solid industrial waste remains a globally accepted and used process for the economic environment. The process of the modern design of landfills begins with a large rectangular man-made hole which is cut into a piece of natural rock.

In order to complete the process of creating the landfill drainage, the synthetic pipes and drainage pipes are attached to the entire man-made hole surrounding the natural rock. The drainage tank and clay are further attached to this natural rock for all the household waste to hold it together. With this the construction of the landfill is completed and ready to use. The process of using the landfill can be identified with the main compartment holding all the household waste. Accordingly, the drainage tank helps in dispoing off the liquid wastes from the compartment and the landfill is covered with one layer of the clay. The final stage of closure can be identified with the clay covering followed by the main use of the synthetic pipes. These pipes help in the emission of the household wastes’ gases which are transmitted from from inside to the outside. The entire process takes place repeatedly when the landfill is filled with household wastes and hence, is used as a hygienic process of dumping the wastes.

Band 8 Answer

The process of landfill waste management describes the design for the storage of household waste. It is predominantly a man-made process that takes place in a natural environment. This involves drainage and disposal of various liquids and gases as well as basic storage of the waste itself. The landfill is meant to be a rectangular hole that is cut into a large piece of natural rock. The synthetic pipes and a layer of clay are then placed against the rock as well as drainage pipes and a drainage tank at the bottom of the landfill.

The household waste is stored in the main compartment and liquid waste is held in the tank at the time of usage. Closing of the landfill is entertained with a paved over single clay layer involving the synthetic pipes still in place. It can transport gases in or out of the storage area. The construction of the landfill is completed with synthetic pipes and a clay layer that is placed against the rock as well as drainage pipes. Landfills are located, designed, operated, and monitored to ensure compliance with the regulations for proper waste management and disposal. They are devised for the protection of the environment from major contaminants that might be present in the waste stream. The building of landfills in an environmentally sensitive area is totally prohibited and is structured with the help of environmental monitoring systems. These monitoring systems analyse the groundwater contamination for landfill gas and also for providing additional safeguards.

Band 9 Answer

Based on the given diagram the waste management system can be evaluated. The bottom liner separates the buried waste from the underlying natural soils and groundwater. The plastic liners are also designed with compacted clay soils in combination with synthetic plastic. The old and new cells are the area in a landfill that is constructed and approved for the disposal of waste. These cells differ in size depending upon the total tons of waste received each day at the landfill.

The construction of the landfill needs to be efficient in terms of digging the hole and placement of the synthetic pipes. With this, the hole is further attached to a drainage tank and clay for it to reach the next stage and complete it for its use. The bottom of each landfill is specially designed so that the bottom surface of the landfill is sloped to a low point, called a sump. This is where any trapped liquids in the landfill which is known in the waste industry as leachate are collected and removed from the landfill. The leachate collection system consists of a series of perforated pipes, gravel packs, and a layer of sand or gravel placed in the bottom of the landfill. Stormwater drainage is the system, the water runoff during rain or storm events is controlled. Bacterial imprudence in the landfill breaks down the trash in the absence of oxygen. This is the drainage tank where all the liquid wastes are exported and the blank area above the tank is used for disposing the wastes which are solid. Further, the presence of the pipes are for the emission of the gases from the household wastes. Since methane gas has the potential to explode, it has to be removed from the landfill. This is done along with a series of pipes that are embedded within the landfill to collect the methane gas. Waste that is placed in a cell is required to be covered daily with either six inches of compacted soil or an alternative daily cover. The groundwater monitoring stations are installed to get direct access to the groundwater around the landfill for the presence of leachate chemicals.
